Ross & Cromarty / Re: Roderick McLeod born abt 1847 and his siblings

Forfarian, thanks for looking.  Norman McLeod of Ravensbourne will be older than 65 for sure but in 1923 he would be 72.

Thanks.  I have only small experience with Australian records, but with Scottish records what is indexed is sometimes all you get or one line which says the same.  I looked up some records for McLeods over 100 years old and all I discovered was that nobody knew who their parents were and that the informant was unrelated.  Alternatively, some have given both parent names and the relationship of the informant.  Or as often happens in Scotland the very old, with no close family, die in the poorhouse.

I've tried looking for Norman McLeod of Ravensbourne, Queensland.  No doubt 91 year-old Christina McLeod would have recorded his details when she died and I am making it harder than I need to.

I am just doing research in the least expensive way possible.

Neale1961 post did remind me that Norman McLeod of Ravensbourne, Queensland (Roderick b1847's brother) was still alive when Roderick died.

There is a difference between Everton, Rothsay and Evanton, Ross-shire.  Which is why I had said it had been suggested.

Debra, thanks for the marriage and the birth info for Margaret.  Kiltearn is also close to Evanton which is where Roderick may have been born in 1847 (unfortunately, I can no longer find the source of that info).  About them all being in Ireland, I have read Roderick's story and he states that his mother died when he was young and then his father went to Ireland eg. after 1852 before 1858.

Debra, his daughter Christina was born in Dingwall, Ross-shire on Dec 28, 1852 according to her gravestone in Queensland, Australia.  It is unlikely that his first wife Christina McDonald was dead as she was Christina's mother.  So no reason to believe he or his kids would be over in Ireland in 1851.

There is a Roderick McLeod visitor aged 32, a shepherd, in the village of Leckmelm, Lochbroom in 1851.  But the kids have to be somewhere.

Thanks for all the help.  It is much appreciated.  I think we can close this unless anyone can find Norman McLeod in Australia.  I looked in Trove and found nothing I could say for certain was about him.

I decided that it would be best for me to ask my question of the Ross and Cromarty, Scotland list rather than here as the 1851 census might be something they have access to.  I tried various searches for family members including other persons and came up with nothing.

What I have discovered is that Roderick's sister Christina was born in Dingwall, Ross-shire 28 Dec 1852.  The image gives the family in 1858, they emigrated to Australia.  The father's name is usually given as Roderick McLeod not Robert.  The mother on this list is the step-mother Bridget Gavin born in Ireland.  The children were all born in Ross-shire with father Roderick and mother either Christina McDonald or Margaret McDonald.

Can anyone who has access to the 1851 census find this family (excluding Christina born in 1852) and supply birth locations and the age of Roderick's 1st wife.  These would be the approximate ages in 1851.

Roderick McLeod age 29 father
Christiana or Margaret age unknown mother (maiden surname McDonald)
Margaret age 9
Roderick 6
Harriet 4
Norman 2

Lochbroom Ross-shire and Evanton has also been suggested.

Using the information provided, which I was delighted to receive by-the-way, I discovered Christina McLeod gravestone and the family tree: <https://www.familysearch.org/tree/pedigree/landscape/K42G-L89> which I have amended to include the first marriage/relationship.  Christina was born in Dingwall, Ross-shire on 28 Dec 1852 from her gravestone.  Since she was the youngest from Roderick's first marriage to Christina (or Margaret) McDonald, I thought to try and find the children in the above image, which gives their ages in 1858 in Scotland's 1851 census.  Unfortunately, my guesses did work out.  Can anyone who has free access to the 1851 census find this family in Scotland?
