thank you. I shall take a look on family search. Most appreciated.

I have also been puzzled by James middle name 'Cochrane' and did wonder where that came from. I have not come across it except as a surname.

thanks again

Roger

Thank you so much for your replies. These are most appreciated and thank you. :)

I do have James Cochrane Smith and Elizabeth Stiller marriage certificate. It is where I learned William Smith was a baker.

The witnesses are John Stiller and Elizabeth Stiller - her mum and dad.

It sounds like a visit to a family search centre to view microfiche might be a way forward and just hope that the plethora of Smiths does not result in several Bakers in the Marylebone area.

Thank you again for taking the time to have a look. It is very good of you.

Kind regards
Roger

Dear Rootschatters,
I do hope you can help me please. :)

My 2 x great grandfather was James Cochrane Smith born 11 Dec 1813 Marylebone, Middlesex, died 24th Nov 1882 Beckenham, Kent. His father was William Smith (bef 1795- aft 1849), a baker, and mother was Mary Clements.

James married Elizabeth Stiller in Wimbledon 13 Sep 1849 and together they had 8 children.

I cannot find whether James Cochrane Smith had any brothers and sisters or any more detail on his parents William and Mary. The census I have found start in 1851.

It would be so good of you to bring your expertise to this and I thank you very much.

Kind regards
Roger

Dear ShaunJ,
Thank you so much and that sounds exactly right as Alfred's father was indeed a Peter. I am interested in your comment that papers survive. Can you let me know where they might be and how I access these.

I really appreciate your very quick reply to my initial enquiry. It is amazing how quickly you have found something. I have searched and searched.I hope you don't mind if you can help me a little further.

With thanks and  kind regards
Roger

Dear Rootschatters,

I attach a photo of a relative or close family friend from my Grans photo album. The photo does not show name or date but was taken at W.E. Wright and Sons in Forest Gate. It must be WW1 or before I think and just maybe the London Scottish Regiment.
I have four candidates who it might be but I have not had the where with all to identify them.
Grant - either William 1867-1939 or Thomas 1877-1946
or
Ewing - either Alfred Peter 1893-1988 or Robert 1895-1981.

It would be wonderful to know who this might be and which Regiment. I do hope you can help me please.

Thank you so much

I did find this for Lily Smith in Sept 1964

SMITH   LILY   80   BRENTWOOD      4A   354

It is Brentwood and not East or West Ham/Forest gate but the dates work. However that would mean Lily somehow found herself moving from Forest Gate into Brentwood area or maybe was sent to a hospital there! Perhaps it is a different Lily.

In your experience is it unusual for a death to be registered in a shortened name like Lily as she was actually christened Lilian Alice Ormesby (I have no idea where the Ormesby came from).

kind regards
Roger

Thanks Milli for all your hard work here. Lily C coupled with the birth date does sound like a different Lily. Maybe I will splash out and get a death certificate  :-\ but first I will follow the Phyllis route and see who registered her death. I will look for probate too to see if Lily is mentioned.

You have been wonderful thank you.

I cannot thank you enough Rootschatters for all the information you have given me over the past hours. You are absolutely splendid.

I think we have found all the Smith children now and with the exception of Lilian Alice Ormesby Smith we have birth and death dates. Did anyone have any luck with Lily or has the trail gone cold at the 1964 electoral census when she is sharing a property with Phyllis Hodgson and two people named Seitz at 87 Earlham Grove West Ham.

Knowing the final outcome of Lily (death date etc) would truly be the icing on the cake.

Many thanks once again
Roger
