Scotland / Re: Parents of Charles Sydserff Laughton

Quick search at Scotland's People website has a Charles Laughton born 10th March 1797 in Holm & Paplay parish (Orkney) to Jo. (probably John) Laughton and Janet Garioch. Ref: 10 / 167.

Caithness / Re: Trying To Identify Sailor - John G Sutherland

From Dumfries and Galloway Standard - Saturday 05 April 1952.

Searches of the British Newspaper Archives show an Inst. Lieut. Sutherland on the HMS Excellent in 1950 (I don't know anything about Naval ranks so this could be a complete red herring).

Kilphedir/Kilphedder is a hamlet in the Kildonan Strath, a mile or so northwest of Helmsdale. I visited there a few weeks ago.

For more information I suggest you join the Clan Sutherland group on Facebook, as the Clan Sutherland genealogist runs it and will be able to tell you in far more detail than I can.

I can only apologise for not being any help and originally dashing your hopes. That was not my intention.

According to the OPRs (Old Parish Registers) there were no John Pringles baptised in Fife between 1799 and 1803 (although there was a James and an Alexander in St Andrews).

There are John Pringles baptised elsewhere in Scotland, but without his parents' names there's no real way of confirming (or otherwise).

Hi happy new year. My name is Colin Laing i live  on Skye but my ancestry comes from Perthshire and Fife.
my father Charles  (87) is son of Robert (methven)/Christina Whyte (Banff MacDuff)  son of Robert/ janet (Dawson)  (forteviot) Son of James and Elisabeth (Scott)(Errol/Carnbee ) then it looks like he is son of Robert /Agnes (mackie) (Carnbee) who is son of David /Ann Small Carnbee  and ultimately so far John Laing and Margaret (Grieg)(Carnbee) as far as i can establish. any other information appreciated.
Hi Colin,

I hope you're still interested in finding your cousins, because that's what we are. :) 4th cousins once removed, if I'm reading you correctly!

Fife / Re: North Hall, Markinch

Helen Christie nee Hamilton appears to have died in 1887 aged 39 in Leuchars, Fife, mother's maiden name Duncan (ref: 445/ 2).

William Christie appears to have died in 1930 aged 84 in St Andrews & St Leonards Parish, St Andrews, Fife (ref: 453/ 65).

This matches the 1881 census returns as they were in Guardbridge, north-east Fife, near Leuchars and St Andrews.

Alexander Christie appears to have died in 1871 aged 60 in Markinch (ref: 447/ 80).

Elizabeth Christie nee Campbell appears to have died in 1874 aged 59 in Markinch, mother's maiden name Dalrymple (ref: 447/ 44).

Hi Kerry

I don't think there's an immediate/obvious connection between the two of us but my family are also from Latheron. I've been up to visit the area every year for the last 10 years now so if you would like to go with someone as a guide then I'm happy to help if I can.

So, I'm interested if any of this matches with any names in your tree?

Thanks,

Jill.
Hi Jill unfortunately there are no obvious connections here. Sorry.
