Ancestral Family Tree DNA Testing / Re: DNA ethnicity doesn't match parents!
« on: Thursday 29 September 22 18:29 BST (UK)  »
It could well be how you are reading the ethniity fgures. These usually come with a large  range  so 11% could be really anything between 1% - 19%  for example.

If you click on the figure in your indivdual ethnicity results, you will see this range. An example from my results for Scotland is

Quote
7%
Your ethnicity estimate is 7%, but it can range from 0-14%  and

Your range of 0—14% comes from making multiple comparisons of your DNA to our reference panel. It includes other possible, but less likely, percentages.
Learn how to understand this data.

See:

https://www.ancestry.co.uk/cs/dna-help/ethnicity/bootstrapping

PS ethnicity estimates should be taken with a large pinch of salt at the moment. It depends on the reference group they are using.

Thank you. I just thought it was weird.
my results say that my parents are my parents, so at least I know I don't have anything to really worry about.

Out of curiosity, what are the ethnicities you have that your parents don’t have, and what are the percentages?

Hi thank you for your reply.
I have:
Germanic Europe - 10%
Scottish - 13%
and neither of my parents have these in their results.

I have spoken to Ancestry about this and they couldn't give me an answer.

Ancestral Family Tree DNA Testing / DNA ethnicity doesn't match parents!

Hi all,
I am hoping someone can try to explain how I have 2 ethnicity regions within my DNA results that neither of my parents have in theirs. Is this possible?

Thank you
Lisa

I'm a little stuck and was wondering if anyone could help me.

George Randall married Sarah Meare in 1804 in Shipley Sussex

I have found a lot of children who have parents George and Sarah in this area, but there is another George Randall and Sarah that married in 1798 in the same area. And on the children's baptisms, it doesn't state the mother's maiden name.
How can I figure out which set of parents these children belong to?

If anyone can point me in the right direction it would be much appreciated.
Thank you.

Cork / Daniel Cooney/Julia Sullivan (Look up please)
« on: Friday 07 May 21 16:58 BST (UK)  »

I am currently looking for any information on my 3rd great grandparents Daniel Cooney (Coony) and Julia Sulivan
The only information I know for certain is that they have a daughter named Mary 04 Apr 1849, Kinsale 1849. She later moved to Wales with her husband Henry.

I found a marriage for Daniel and Julia - 17 November 1846 In KINSALE, Ireland

On the marriage, it states the witnesses are TIMY SULLIVAN and JOANAH SULLIVAN

I originally thought they may have been Julia’s parents, however, I haven’t been able to find any evidence of this.

If anyone can find any other information for me I would be eternally grateful. I am really struggling with this search.

Thank you

I think you need to keep an open mind.

There are a multitude of alternative names to consider when searching for ancestors. e.g.
Edward/Neddy
Sarah/Sally
Mary/Mally/Maria/Molly
Margaret/Peggy
Elizabeth/Betty
Ann/Hannah/Agnes/Nancy/Nanny

I have definitely started to keep an open mind by doing this type of research.  There have been many varying names I have come across within my family tree, however, in this case,  I don't just want to assume Ann is Nancy.  I was hoping to find other documentation that can help me corroborate this information is correct.

Thank you for your help

Nancy is commonly used as another name for Ann, as is Hannah  :)

From Wikipedia:

"The name Nancy was originally a diminutive form of Anne or Ann."

When was Henry's oldest sibling born? Was it around 1763? That would be a good way to corroborate the information. How was the mother's name listed on his/her baptism?

Queenie  :)

I am not sure about this.
I have found many baptisms in Maresfield with the father of Henry Jupp, but some of them say Nanny as the mother and others say, Nancy, none of them say Ann.

The version of SMI I am looking at says
Henry Jupp + Nanny Ridley
11 May 1762, Maresfield.

East Sussex parish registers are coming to ancestry, so hopefully you will be able to see the marriage online.

I have a copy of the SMI and it says Ann Ridley, not Nanny.
That is very strange.

Hi,

A family tree on Ancestry has the following:

Henry JUPP m. Ann Nancy RIDLEY

11 May 1762 in St Bartholomew's Church, Maresfield, Sussex

Maybe you could try looking this up on SFHG?

Queenie  :)

I have done this already and there is a marriage in Maresfield of a Henry Jupp and an Ann Ridley but not Ann Nancy Ridley yet on the baptism it says Nancy Jupp. So there is no way of corroborating this information.
