Thanks Francine. I presume you have local knowledge? That's the sort of information no one ever hears normally, and it's great to hear some history like that.

Do you have any records for Normanton? Im trying to find a John Dean who died in 1875 but was born around 1815 (though the year does change between censuses).

Ooh thanks. His name was Luke Dean, buried I believe November 1839. I've looked it up on the NBI and he's definitely there, I just don't know where.

The problem for me, is that I don't think Im going to get any more information from Parish records, which is why Im looking for other sources of information, such as Church records on parish priests, personnel records for the West Riding constabulary, Samuel Hirsts Diaries, Company Information and Land Tax Records.

They say they have records for the West Riding Constabulary, but when I ask them, they can't tell me what records they are!

Frustrating.

I also took a lovely photograph of St Pauls when I went to visit a few days ago:

Yorkshire (West Riding) / Any Advice for Wakefield Archives?
« on: Thursday 14 August 08 22:43 BST (UK)  »
Hi There,

I have an impending visit to the Wakfield Archives in September. Im on a huge trek from Birmingham to Yorkshire where I'll be stopping for a few days and I want to make the most use of my time. The trouble is, I've been to the Wakefield Archives website and searched through the catalogue, and I have no idea what Im searching for.

When I booked the appointment, I was told to have a look through the catalogue and make requests for what I want to see. But when I email with the details but with some question marks over what the reference numbers might be, can you help, the response is just to do the lookups on the day.

Im not sure what's happening or what I need to do, but hopefully someone out there can help.

Here's the email I sent (trimmed for brevity):

Quote
I was advised to get in touch to mention the items I was wanting to look at. While I can give you references for the first two, I am struggling to find appropriate references on the website for the rest and Im hoping you can provide assistance as I believe I now know what information i would like to search for.

First I would like to look at Samuel Hirsts Diaries, which I believe are under reference Z188 at Wakefield GB201.

Secondly, I would like to look at the Parish Records (burials 1839) for St Pauls, Hanging Heaton under reference WDP146 at Wakefield GB201.

In previous communication, I have said that I have a relative who is listed in 1901 as being a second office on the Frankfort of Goole, a ship I understand to belong to the Goole Steam Shipping Company. I understand you have no personnel records for this, but you said you have some records of this company under collection C299. I am having trouble finding this on the website, and Im not sure what kind of information it is likely to contain, but this is something that I may find interesting to look at as well.

The next bits I would like to try and find are a bit hazy. I would like to try and find where my ancestors may have lived. They were mostly nothing more than agricultural labourers etc. You previously mentioned it may be worthwhile looking at the land tax returns under reference QE13.

I don't know if there are others collections of data to help me in my quest, but the people places and dates I have in mind are:

John Dean(e) - Castleford, 1779 to 1800
Luke Dean(e) - Kellington, 1810 to 1815
John Dean - Kellington, 1838 to 1860
Mary Ann Heron/Frances Heron/Charles Heron - Kellington, 1850 to 1870
John Dean - Ferry Fryston, 1861 to ~1870
John Dean - Normanton, 1871 to ~1875
Joseph Dean - Kellington, 1871 to ~1887
Joseph Dean - Beal, 1888 - ~1895
Joseph Dean - 1896 to 1901 - Gowdall

I would also like to try and find some burial locations. I know which church my ancestors are buried at, what I don't have, is a grave location. Unfortunately most of the churches I contact no longer seem to have records let alone burial locations. Could you advise whether you have any records on burial locations?

In particular:

All Saints, Normanton - 1862
St Andrew, Ferry Fryston - 1861
St Edmund, Kellington - 1838 to 1842
St Paul, Hanging Heaton - 1839

You also mention you may have records for the West Riding Constabulary. I have a relative by the name of William Watson, who in the 1891 census and prior, was listed as a Police Constable in Bishop Monkton, Ripon. In 1901, he shows as a Police Constable in Castleford. I'd like to try and see if there are any personnel or other records for this individual, but I do not know what to search for on the website. Could you advise?

Finally, I have information for a Thomas Heron, born 1752 who married Hannah Sturdy in 1752. Amongst their children were Frances Heron (1792) and Mary Ann Heron (1781). Information I have for their births in Pontefract, suggest that Thomas was a Vicar or Reverand, possibly of St Giles. Would there be any available information about this individual with relation to his church duties etc?

Can anyone offer any helpful advice?

Thanks
Simon

I'll certainly have a look through Birmingham. Give me a chance to get a CARN card as well.

Of course, MI, Monumental Inscriptions. It always seems to be a thing with me, I ask if they have anything, they say no. I was looking for some for the church in Hanging Heaton, Dewsbury, but alas they (the archives) don't have anything. It looks to be a small church so I'll go and have a poke around.

I've found the two burial locations for Uriah Dean who died when he was 12 and Amos Joshua Dean who died when he was four. Im off to Middlesbrough on Friday in the hope I can find something.

In terms of looking through deeds/land registry etc, what useful information would be good to take with me? I mean, Im presuming Name, and Dates of Where/When they lived from Census and other Information?

Thanks muchly Dave for the insightful post.

So I don't necessarily need to have some plan of what I want to search for and reserve it, but just go on the day, and then give them my demands?

When you say look for the name I want to research, are we talking about a specific person here, or specific item in the catalogue?

You mention Land Registry, I note on the Wakefield Archives they mention the Registry of Deeds. So I may find some information in there too? I gather a Filation order is something about children. MI's though?

Unfortunately I doubt any of my family would have written any books or anything like that. But I can certainly have a look for anything that might be interesting. Im sure I'll find a lot. I just popped in Charles Heron into a search engine and came out with a reference for a letter by him to some solicitor with regards to the deceased William Sugden or something familar. That sounds intriguing. I'll have a look at that for starters.

Are there any other things which might be considering interesting?

Cheers

Yorkshire (West Riding) / What Should I Look For?

Hi,

I've taken my paternal line back to 1781 and hit a brick wall as I have no mothers name and with a name like John Dean(e) from Yorkshire, I have a hard time going further back.

That's not too bad. I feel I've got as much as I can from Census and BMD information etc and would now like to fill in the blanks. Any tidbit of information that might show what life was like for my ancestors, where they lived, what they did, who they worked for, what they ate, drank, how much they earned, did they go to school. It's hard to describe what Im after, I just want to find as much as possible.

With that in mind, I've got a few days of holiday booked off soon and I plan a trip to the Wakefield archives.

The reason for me coming here, is that I want to know what is out there. I don't want to drive from Birmingham to Yorkshire, look at one item and then sit around twiddling my thumbs. So I need as much as possible to look at. Im not expecting to get through it all, but I just need to make sure that I do something with my time.

Has anyone got any ideas of what information I could look for? What archives I could search in?

My Focus area is around the Castleford, Kellington, Wakefield, Dewsbury areas of Yorkshire. My time frame is 1750 to 1850 or so (maybe later).

The bits I have:

John Dean(e) (b Unknown)
son: Luke Dean(e) b 1781 in Castleford, m 1810 to Sarah Hutchinson in Austerfield
son: John Dean b 1815 in Wakefield m 1837 to Jane backhouse in Kellington
son: incl Joseph dean b 1850 in Kellington

Joseph Dean in 1901 was apparently listed as a farmer as opposed to a farm labourer. He married Hannah Mary Horncastle in 1872. In the 1861 census he is listed as living with a couple of women, one being Mary Ann Heron who was 79 at the time. It is suggested that she was one of two maiden and/or wealthy aunts. It would obviously be quite interesting to see if there is any information for the Herons in Kellington.

I believe I have found a Death Duty Register for John Dean. Is it likely that there should be a corresponding will (I understand at the Borthwick?):

Quote
"""7th June and 300

To Trustees & Executors £50 In trust at the end of 12 mo after his death to pay divide the same amt equally amongst all every his first cousins, nephews and nieces as shall on or before the expiration of the 12mo put in substantiate then claim before his trustees or the xxx of them

To said William Garnett & John Oddy - £40 in trust to lay the same out in the purchase of an annuity for his blind cousin the daughter of Sarah Rhodes his aunt during her life in such way as his trustee shall think proper

To Jeremy Booth and James Fletcher £25 each to be paid 12 months after his decease

He also gives to the said William Garnett and John Oddy all the rest, reidue xxcent ofhis money Xxx for the debts here Est, effects whatso whereax absolutely."""

Sorry couldn't read all of that properly.

I am at least going to have a ponder through the Samuel Hirst diaries, and have a look through any police records to see if I can find another relative, a William Watson who in 1888 is reported as being a Rural Policeman.

Can anybody recommend anything else that might be useful for this area of Yorkshire and this timeframe?

Thanks
Simon

Yorkshire (West Riding) / Introduction/ Dean(e)
« on: Thursday 01 June 06 10:59 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

I wanted to introduce myself. I'll hopefully be in here quite a bit in the future.

I am tracing my family line back, and have gone back to Joseph Dean, born 1850 in Kellington, Yorkshire (one of 14 children).

His parents were John Dean (1815) and Jane Backhouse (1819). John Deans parents were Luke Dean (1781, Castleford), and Sarah Hutchinson.

There's a bit of a controversy over where Luke Dean came from. He did get married in 1810 to Sarah Hutchinson in Austerfield. The reference in Pallots I see in Ancestry, suggest that Luke is from Austerfield, however there is no matching entry in the parish register for this birth. The closest match (so far according to the IGI), as a Luke Dean born 1781 in Castleford.

Im waiting to get the the FHC to look this record up, but have not had a chance due to one thing and another.

I thought I'd say Hi though and introduce myself. I havent really done that have I? Im Simon Dean, from Birmingham. Just been researching my family tree and have been going for just under a year. Looking for that next step in my Dean history.

So if anyone has any links, let me know.

Cheers
Simon

My family tree, by the way, is linked under that little world icon on the left...

Scouse-mouse didn't have a problem though I'm not sure of the date:

http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,155904.msg724335.html#msg724335

Furthermore, can you not just order the original birth registration in the normal way online via the GRO?

Can't do it online unfortunately. Although all the other information is on the GRO Indexes, we are not sure of the parents first names. And as this birth after 1975, parents first names are required information.

Also there seems to be a different of opinion about whether the original birth certificate would be protected or not.

I thought it was in the indexes and so should be available as per all the other certificates?

Provide information? Crumbs. That could be difficult. I don't know what I can provide. Even my "client" doesn't know the first names (yet).

Just tried the search feature and found a couple of links, but it talks about looking through the adoptions register and finding the new names of adoptees. Whereas I want to find the original information. So unfortunately, I don't think the adoption registers will help.

I will try the local records office. It's a little easier for me to get to (well, it will be when I can walk again). Maybe if they were worried about me using a certificate, I could volunteer to deface it or destroy it in front of them?

There has to be some way around this.
