Hi All.

nicdigby there is a Guernsey Family History page here which may help in the future or other rootchatters.

I have had a lot of help recently from the La Societe Guernsey https://societe.org.gg/wp/family-history/

Sandy

Thank you :)

I've ordered their marriage cert to get his father's name (hopefully!).

In the meantime, I'm looking at his wife's daughter, Lucy Emma HEATH, who was listed as being born to Fanny when she was unmarried, so before she met James.

After James' death in 1899, the newspapers appealed nationwide for his heirs to come forward. We know that he was a widower. So I wondered why his step daughter hadn't been located. She appears to have vanished off the face of the earth. Can anyone locate a marriage, death or census record from 1891 onwards for her please? (we already have the 1881 census for her)

Lucy Emma HEATH was born Q2 1869 in South Stoneham (near Southampton), Hampshire to Fanny HEATH. Listed as 'daughter' of James NORTHAM on 1881 census so could be using surname NORTHAM or HEATH. Her mother died when Lucy was 21 years old.

Thank you in advance.

It was the fact that I could not find the births of the children in Lancashire that made me wonder if they were in actual fact born there

Yes I see your point now, thank you. So maybe he was born in Devon but the enumerator wrote Lancs? I think I will order his marriage cert to find out his father's name and go from there.

I'm struggling to break down this 1861 census, and any marriage/birth of children etc. Cannot find any of them in 1871.

James Northam aged 22     Telegraph Clerk        born Exeter
Mary Ann          aged 24                                   Lancs

Thank you. I am unsure of this because it states he was born in Lancashire although I can see his father had the Exeter link.

Super, thanks Debra for the info.

Can anyone help to locate a 1861 or 71 census record please for James Northam? Born Exeter circa 1857.
Possibly Southampton or Exeter, or (for the 1871) in the Channel Islands as the ships he sailed went from Southampton, Hampshire to Jersey and Guernsey and he may have been a “boy” apprentice who started at 14.

Also a birth record for him in Exeter?

James NORTHAM, ship's cook, is with wife Fanny (29) and daughter Lucy (11) in Southampton in 1881.  It looks like Fanny died in 1890.  He is a bit older, his age is also given as 29.

There is a possible marriage in 1877 with James NORTHAM and Fanny HEATH on the same page which would make it unlikely that Lucy was his daughter.

Debra  :)

Thank you.
Where have you found a record for the death of Fanny please?

And where is the marriage of Fanny and him recorded as taking place?

Can anyone find a 1861 or 71 census record please? Possibly Southampton or Exeter. I’ve found nothing that fits.

Also a birth record for him in Exeter?

I had missed that fact. Thank you. Now I know he was married and she died before 1891. Can anyone find his marriage please?

Other Countries / Malta - marriage between 1861 & 1881 and birth of daughter

Hi,
Can anyone find me a marriage please? Can't find it in the UK so am wondering if they married in her home country of Malta when he was there for Navy business??

Groom: William VEY. Sailor or Merchant Seaman. b. about 1843 in Southampton, Hampshire.
Bride: 'Fannie' [surname not known]. b. about 1845 in Malta.

Fannie's possible death in Malta before 1891 as I cannot locate it in UK.

And a birth of their daughter Julia VEY, b. about 1868 in Malta.

I am working from the 1881 census details.

William VEY later re-married and I have all those details already.
