Glamorganshire / Re: Glyntaff look ups - Phillips Pontypridd
« on: Saturday 30 March 19 22:56 GMT (UK)  »
Glyntaff was indeed the earliest crematorium in Wales, and opened in 1924.  The records are still with Glyntaff Crematorium themselves, and they've also got the registers for Glyntaff Cemetery (on the same site) - and the staff there should be able to assist with a lookup. :) Their phone number is 01443 402810, but I can't see an email address for them online.

If the people you're searching for lived in Trethomas, though, I wonder if their young children would have instead been buried in one of the cemeteries now under Caerphilly County Borough - although I must admit my local knowledge is a bit sketchy outside of Rhondda-Cynon-Taf, so am not sure which cemetery (Bedwas Cemetery is probably the closest, but I don't think they were opened as early as that).  You could try contacting Caerphilly's bereavement's department - there's a contact form on their website: https://eforms.caerphilly.gov.uk/forms/webCACFINFO101.aspx?section=Bereavement%20services

Alfred John, Grace Harriett, Ella Beatrice and John Arthur were still living in Leatherhead in 1939 but Grace Lillian is not with them.
Many thanks for your reply.  Must admit I'm a little confused though, as Alfred John Twyman died in 1924 - and Grace Lillian (my grandmother) is listed on both the 1939 register and the 1939 electoral registers in 168 Kingston Road with her siblings and widowed mother. ???

I wonder if anyone visiting Surrey History Centre would be able to check for a few baptisms for me please - all in Ss. Mary & Nicholas' Church Leatherhead.  The baptisms I'm searching for are for my grandmother and her two siblings.  Their names & dates of birth are:

  • Ella Beatrice Twyman.  Born 14th June 1915.
  • Grace Lillian Twyman.  Born 1st October 1916.
  • John Arthur Twyman.  Born 28th March 1918.

All were the children of Alfred John Twyman & Grace Harriett Kennard - I believe their address was 168 Kingston Road.

Any help would be really appreciated. :)

Kent / Re: Joseph & Eliza Pluish of Frinsbury
« on: Monday 22 January 18 16:33 GMT (UK)  »
Many thanks everyone.  :)  Must confess that I hadn't considered that it might be spelled as Plewis.  I've come across an Eliza Plewis subsequently on 1871, 1881 and 1891 living in Senacre House in Otham, and wonder if this is the lady I'm after - she's down as a widowed housekeeper born in Selling in all three returns.  Ref numbers are as follows if anyone wants to look. :)
1871: RG10/939 38/12
1881: RG11/926 34/2
1891: RG12/685 93/3

What I find interesting are the two 1851 returns that have been mentioned in the thread (many thanks for those :) ) as in both cases the children are noted as born in Kent Stoke.  Not sure of the geography of that part of Kent (I was a Maidstone lad myself before we moved), but believe that's near Hoo?  If that is indeed her it's interesting, as while it does contradict the marriage entry (where father is given as Thomas, rather than Timothy as the census suggests) it would be convenient - partly as I do know the Timothy Twyman there (he was the husband, if I remember correct, of Frances Saven/Savin, and did flit around Selling and Whitstable).  I'll have to check in my file when I get home from work about if I know of a daughter Eliza for him.

Thanks again all for all your help and work.  It really is appreciated.  :)

Kent / Joseph & Eliza Pluish of Frinsbury
« on: Monday 22 January 18 14:36 GMT (UK)  »
Hi all.  I'm having a bit of a problem is tracing a family through pretty much every record I can find, and hope that a new set of eyes might see something I've missed.  As part of my one-name study in the Twyman name, I've come across the attached marriage entry on CityArk - from All Saints' in Frinsbury.  The problem I'm having is that apart from this marriage entry, I'm not finding anything at all relating to Joseph Pluish (or indeed the Pluish surname at all) on either FindMyPast or Ancestry.

I've been hoping to find Joseph & Eliza together on a census return to find out what her place of birth & date is, as I'm at a loss as to who she is besides being the daughter of Thomas Twyman as noted on the marriage entry.  Anyone able to find anything at all please?  This is driving me a little bit loopy, if I'm honest.

I remember Anthony was a gem when based in Treorchy FH library. Wonder if he is still with RCT?
Anthony was indeed a gem.  I remember going into Treorchy when I first started researching (several years before I started working for RCT Libraries), and can't praise him highly enough for the help he gave.  Sadly he's no longer with us - he tragically passed away a few years ago.  It says a lot about him, though, that I often hear people say how helpful he was.
Thanks for the praise.  We all try our very best, and must admit that I love every minute of it - it doesn't feel like work to me, as my job is also my hobby.  :)

The Lighter Side / Re: Am I really related to William the Conqueror??

I can do one better, in that the Norwood surname part of my tree are rumoured to be descendants of Harold Godwinson.  I want my bloomin' throne back!!! ;D

Begging your pardon, but being a descendant of Harold Godwinson doesn't entitle you to the throne. It merely makes you, at best, king-worthy. An atheling. One of the candidates from whom the Witan are entitled to elect a king ...

There was no settled and established right of succession to the throne in Anglo-Saxon England.
Indeed.  Very much aware of this. A joke, my friend, a joke. :)

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Re: Will of John Twymer of Chatham
« on: Sunday 23 April 17 17:37 BST (UK)  »
Many thanks.  I really appreciate your help & the work you've put in.

I wonder who the grandsons mentioned are...had been hoping there would be mention of children.  I'm doing a one-name study into the Twyman surname, and am following up on the suggestion made in the new dictionary of surnames that Twyman derives from Twymer.  Like all good sources, though, this will has raised as many questions than it's answered. :)

Many thanks for the next section Bookbox. :)  I'd just logged back in to post the third & final section so that the full will is here in context, and was surprised & thrilled to see the second section done already.  My heartfelt thanks.  To say I'm over the moon would be an understatement. :)  I owe you one.
