Family History Beginners Board / How to identify grandfather in workhouse

I know my grandfather was born in Croydon Surrey. I also believe much of his childhood was spent in a workhouse. I am just starting my search so I am not having much luck using google for any hints. I am trying to find out where i should search to identify which workhouse he was in. Can anyone provide a suggested site?
