Trish, I'm not sure, I understand what you mean:

Marriage;
02 Jun 1846, St Mary Magdalene, Fleet, Lincolnshire*
George HALLIFAX, Bachelor, Sull Age, Fatmer, Father EDMUND a Farmer
Jane DIDWELL, Spinster, Full Age, Servant, Father MATTHEW a Labourer
Witnesses, Sarah HERBERT/John JEALOUS

I do have Sarah Herbert as married to John Didwell, not sure who is John jealous?

Thanks again everyone for taking a look, I must admit my head is spinning lol! and I might have to print EVERYTHING as it might be clearer with paper in front of me.

I agree name changes could be due to accents, or miss spelling by clerics.

I have got the England, Select Deaths and Burials, 1538-1991 records FHL Film Number1040591 showing Mathew as Didwell died 1853

Also John Didwell's baptism on the Norfolk transcripts showing his parents as Mathew and Mary Didwell and not Diddle

So I don't think John changed the name, and chant see why Mathew would change from Diddle to didwell himself unless it was miss typed by a cleric?

However I've also just found FHL Film Number:   1040559 baptism 1750 for Mathew Diddle which is more than 30yrs before Mathew Didwell's birth (going by census date) ...so this does now make me think they might not be the same person

Does that sound correct?

Spent another couple of hours yesterday on Mathew and found the following

Bapt of John  on 11 Apr 1790 to Mathew and Mary Diddle, Welney Norfolk

Bapt of Denstone Diddle on 12 sept 1786 to Mathew and Rebecca Diddle, Welney Norfolk

Both of which would mean Mathew Didwell would have been under 10yrs at the time

Having a look at his possible mother Susanna Reynolds.

I've found Susanna Diddell on the 1851 and 1861 census living ( and dieing) in Huntingdonshire, Cambridge

I know people move around, but all of the above don't fit nicely with Mathew Didwell also being Mathew Diddle, so I'm still uncomfortable taking this as fact.

Your collective thoughts would be appreciated

Many thanks spendlove, it's great to hear I might be on the right lines! And that Mathew Didwell and Mathew Diddle could be the same person.

I'm sure I found a few conflicts that appeared like they lived in parallel (suggesting different people) I'll have another look at the docs I found.

That was the main reason I wanted a little reassurance from the experts on here, that I wasn't barking up the wrong tree :)

Family History Beginners Board / Mathew Didwell 1781-1853 Norfolk help

Afternoon,

I'm stuck again  ???

Tracing John Didwell 1816-1869  - I'm happy with his details, but it's his parents I'm having trouble with.

The 1851 census shows Mathew Didwell age 73 (miss transcribed as dodwell) as a widower visitor born Hilgay Norfolk, in the same house as John Didwell (so I assume he is likely John's father) in Walpole at peter

1841 census has Mathew age 60 living in Walpole at peter, living on his own age 60

I've found lots of electoral registers for Mathew Didwell living at West drove in Walpole at peter

I've also found the baptism transcripts of John Didwell for 22 Dec 1816, showing his parents as Mathew and Mary.

All good so far! But now things get more confusing.

I couldn't find any marriage of birth/baptism records for Mathew to start looking for his parents. For a while I thought I'd solved it, as I found marriage records (Norfolk transcripts) for Mathew Diddle, marrying Mary Brooks April 1810 in the next parish Tilney at Lawrence. Dates seem fine as John is born 6 yrs later.

I've also found a baptism transcript for the baptism of Mathew Diddle Apr 1778 in Hilgay (not found anything similar for Didwell) it shows Mathew's parents as John and Susanna.

I have some earlier and later marriages for Mathew Didwell (to Ann Oliver, and Jane Kidd)

But I'm not 100% convinced the change in name from Diddle to didwell is the same person, particularly now I've dug a bit deeper and found more records that seems to conflict

I've also found records on ancestry for a marriage between Mathew Diddle to Mary mason in 1789 (can't be right as Mathew would be 6)

A baptism for John Diddle parents Mathew and Mary but the date is June 1794

But I've also found a baptism transcript for Jane Diddle parents Mathew and Mary in Walpole at peter date may 1819. But by this time he was known as Didwell on other records

I have another baptism for Ann Diddle, march 1799, parents Mathew and Mary - before the date of the marriage records I'd found

Bear in mind I have a marriage record dated may 1802 between Mathew Dedwell of Walpole at peter and Jane Kidd (assume this is the same Mathew)

I'm completely confused so any help untangling this is appreciated

Family History Beginners Board / Re: Thomas Alstone 1650 Chard Somerset parents

Thanks for the link, I had a quick look through, but looks like a lot of reading as there isn't a search function that I could see so might come back to it at a later date
I contacted the Somerset heritage centre, and they couldn't find any Alstone's in their index of will's. So they suggested searching the BTs they have, but I'm not local, so I'll have to park that too for now.
I think I'll go over some of the info I have on that line to check it is correct, and might move to a different line next.
So thank you all for the help so far.....and I'll probably have more questions on a different ancestor soon!!

Just looked at the 1717 burial record for Thomas and it says Thomas Alstone son of the Burrough. I assume this means he was born in Chard? Would have been great if it had said his father's name rather than Burrough!

Many thanks, that does confirm Alston's were still in Chard at that time. I did start to wonder if they had moved to the area, but lack of info is likely to be due to the missing records then.
I spent a long night last night looking at the Somerset CoE baptism records for Chard on ancestry, line by line, page by page .. not using the transcript! Except when I needed confirmation. I didn't find what I was looking for, but did find a few more Alston's
Jane daughter of Thomas Alstone baptism 1 Jan 1651
Richard son of Thomas Alstone baptism 10 mar 1660
The dates would fit with this Thomas, being the father of the Thomas I'm researching. But that is an assumption.
I then found
Elizabeth daughter of William and Tamsin Alstone baptism 3 may 1664
Edith daughter of William and Tamsin Alstone baptism 7 Jan 1665
William son of William and Thamsin Alstone baptism 11 Dec 1667
Thomas son of William and Thamzin Alstone baptism 3 jul 1670
Christopher son of William and Thamzin Alstone baptism 12 aug 1672
Not sure who William and Thamzin are, but I suspect William could be an uncle of my Thomas.
I then found more children from my Thomas
Thomas son of Thomas and Elizabeth Alstone baptism 26 Apr 1672
Thomas son of Thomas and Elizabeth Alstone baptism 2 Feb 1674 from this I assume their first child Thomas must have died
John son of Thomas and Elizabeth Alstone baptism 1 may 1680 - this was transcribed incorrectly as Alltone
Elizabeth daughter of Thomas and Elizabeth Alstone baptism 25 mar 1683

John son of Thomas and Johan Alstone baptism 1 may 1683 - not sure who these are or how they relate.

Finally on page 103

Johanee daughter of Thomas and Elizabeth Alstone baptism 4 Apr 1686 it is this Joane who I believe then goes on to marry Robert Demont. So I didn't look any further ...and it was getting late!

So other than the assumption that the earlier Thomas is the father of mine and grand father of Joanne, I didn't find any conclusive evidence.
