Thanks everyone for the replies, it looks to be John and Elizabeth. Strange spelling of Barrett!

Northamptonshire / Susannah Barrett

Iím hoping someone could help me find who Susannah Barrettís parents were. Most of my family research is Scottish and Iím stumped here where I feel I should be able to locate further back.

I know she was born in Grafton, Northamptonshire around 1800.

She married Samuel Shrives in 1822 also in Grafton, Northamptonshire.

She died in Devon in 1864.

From what I can see she had 9 children in total.
John (1823 - 1899)
Ann (1823 - 1898)
Gabriel (1826 -
Charlotte (1829 -
Priscilla (1831 - 1901)
Hannah (1834 - 1912)
Anna Maria (1837 -
Ellen (1839 - 1914)
Henry (1845 - 1914)

They mustíve moved to Devon between 1837 and 1839 as Anna Maria was born in Northamptonshire and Ellen, Devon.

Lanarkshire / Re: Ann Orr Born in England?
« on: Saturday 30 October 21 17:25 BST (UK)  »
It look very likely that Ann & her sister Elizabeth married brothers James & Peter.

JAMES RANNIE   Married    MARY GORDON   20/12/1797   Edinburgh

JAMES RENNIE/RAINNIE/RAINNY & MARY GORDON
Ė children Kirknewton and East Calder

PETER 20/09/1801, DAVID 3/05/1807, HENRY ALLAN 14/05/1809
ROBERT 21/07/1811, JAMES 29/08/1813, ALEXANDER LOCKH 18/05/1817

It would be worthwhile looking at the Kirk Session records on SP.

Colin

Thanks Colin, I hadn't managed to find Peter of SP, obviously not searching enough variations of Rennie.

I couldn't see anything about their marriages in the Kirk Sessions, but as for James' brother Alexander Lockhart Simpson Rennie, i see that the Reverend was an Alexander Lockhart Simpson. I had wondered why he had such a long name, and now i know. Thanks for the suggestion of looking in the Kirk sessions

Iím not too sure, just Ann to my knowledge. Iíve looked up the two siblings on SP but nothing of note came up, so itís hard to tell.

According to someone else on ancestry her father, William Orr was born in Edinburgh 1780 and mother, Ann Carfrae in Borthwick 1782, whether thatís just a guess through SP records, or maybe they know something I donít.

Iíve not managed to find anything about Williamís military service, there was a hint on ancestry on a William Orr located in India, but Iím pretty sure itís a different person, as you say, itís common surname.

Iíve looked for death records for her parents on SP but nothing comes up either.

Many thanks for your help Colin.

Lanarkshire / Ann Orr Born in England?

I'm not terribly sure where to put this, so sorry if it's in the wrong place.

I have a relative, Ann Orr who on censuses claims to be born in England around 1810. She died in 1900 and states her parents to be William Orr and Ann Carfrae.

She had two siblings born in Kirknewton in 1800 and 1803, (Elizabeth and John), so I assume her parents had moved down to England before then, before moving back up to Kirknewton as she married there in 1835, to James Rennie.

Her father was a Soldier, so maybe that's why they moved down south. Anyway, I can't seem to find her birth anywhere so I was hoping someone could help me with that as I'd like to know in what area of England she was born.

JAMES GOULD/ISABELLA FOOT children

HELEN 8/04/1803 St Cuthbert's death 3/04/1805

Edinburgh

HELEN 18/09/1809, ISABEL AGNES 12/04/1812, ROBERT 15/07/1818

No record for Margaret who appears on the 1841 census with the family age 15 (1822-1826)?

Possible death of Helen above?
HELEN GUILD   Burial    JAMES GUILD   07/10/1811   Edinburgh

GOULD   JAMES   JOHN GOULD/AGNESS DICK    12/02/1779   Gladsmuir, East Lothian

FOOT   ISABEL   ROBERT FOOT/MARGARET JACK    02/08/1778   Bo'Ness, West Lothian

JOHN GUILD   Married    AGNESS DICK   02/02/1762   Gladsmuir

Look like they had 8 children, including Isabel, Helen & Margaret.

All seems to fit to me.

Colin

Thanks Colin,

Isabella Foot, was born in Edinburgh though to Robert Foot and Helen Dawson. No sing of an Isabella born to them but there was an Elizabeth in 1779 so thereís a possibility itís her.

Not wishing to confuse but this is how the death is recorded on Scotland's People

GOOLD   JAMES   Died    Age 75   13/12/1854   Edinburgh

Is this James in 1851?

W. Richmond St. St Cuthberts
GOULD   James   Head   72   Porter           MLN   Edinburgh
GOULD   Isabella   Wife   72                      MLN   Edinburgh
GOULD   Robert   Son   32   Brass Founder   MLN   Edinburgh

Colin

Yes, sorry it states Goold on SP, but having read it Iím sure it reads Gould, his wife is down as Gould in 1857.
His son Robert in that census is my G-G-G Grandfather. Iím not sure what happened to Isabel Agnes, she may have moved to America but I canít be certain.

Sorry, don't know if this is the correct place to post this!

I have a relative named James Gould. Died in Edinburgh in 1854 and was born roughly in 1779. He stated on both census' that he was from Edinburgh, however I can't find any birth record for him (not unusual for back then, of course). Looking up other people's births around then that have the same surname I think I may have found who his parent's were, but I wanted to post on here to get someone else's opinion. Basically, tell me if i'm clutching to straws here please!

James married Isabella Foot in 1802 in Edinburgh, however was under the name Guild instead of Gould but this is definitely the correct man.

Another person of the surname Guild also married in Edinburgh, in the same parish (Greyfriars) in 1792. Her name was Isabel Guild and she married Duncan McIntyre. On her marriage note it states her father is John Guild of East Lothian.

John Guild of East Lothian married Agnes Dick, they had 5 children (1764, 1769, 1762, 1771 and 1776) all were born in Gladsmuir, East Lothian.

My theory is John and Agnes are the parents of James Gould/Guild
Here's where the connections begin.

John Guild worked as a Wright/Labourer, at some point James also worked as a Labourer, so there's a small connection there. Although, James spent most of his life working as a Spirit Porter.

James Gould/Guild could have been born in East Lothian and just stated it was Edinburgh as it was fairly close, or his parent's were in Edinburgh at the time of his birth which is why there is no birth note for him.

John Guild and Agnes Dick, according to their marriage note from Gladsmuir, got a marriage certificate in Edinburgh, I'm not sure if this is unusual though.

This one is my main connection between them. James had a daughter named Isabel Agnes Gould, could this be named after his mother and sister? It was unusual back then to have a middle name.

I can post the BMD certificates if people are wanting to look at them, themselves.

Scotland / Re: Cousin Marriage

I have a branch from my tree from Caithness, a lot of them married their cousins, I have direct descendants whoís marriage certificate state they were both first and second cousins. I think that would make their parentís cousins as well? Iíve not been able to confirm that though!
