Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Re: Signature on a c1880 photograph from Madeira

Thanks to Treetotal for the inverted photo, that does help. After reviewing all the replies I am now inclined to the view that it is D.(?)inning. Maybe a census will throw up some possibilities for the name but I haven't found anything so far.

Thanks very much for the ideas and to Kiltaglassan for the link to the article on Camacho. Assuming that the shop in Funchal closed when he moved to Lisbon that gives a definite range of 1870-78 for the photograph, a little later than previously analysed.

I hadn't really considered Denning because of the dot after the D but I agree it's a possibility. I wonder if it could be "D. Imning"?

None of the names tie in with my family tree from Liverpool so nothing to help on that front and why there is photo from Madeira in the album is also a mystery.

I'm trying to decipher the signature on the back of this photograph in a Victorian album of my family. Any suggestions much appreciated.

I would also be interested to know about the photographer so I've attached the front image thought to be from c1880 of a man aged c40.

Looking forward to reading what people think and thanking all who reply in advance!

Thank you very much for the explanation, that's great, (the thought had only recently crossed my mind).

I've been doing some Sandfurd investigation and there was indeed a Thomas brother to the Laird of Sandfurd (Alexander) at the time of teh will. The challenge now is to establish a link (surely there must be one!?) between "my" Thomas Nairne, beneficiary in the will, (and son of William Nairne and Margaret Arnott) and the Nairnes of Sandfurd.

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Scottish 17th century will puzzle

My interpretation of the first extract is: "...given up by Thomas Nairne of Kirkhill his only lawful son and Executor Dative"

My interpretation of the second extract is "...Thomas Nairne Executor Thomas Nairne brother germane to the Laird of Sanffoord..."

But "only lawful son" and "brother germane" is surely a contradiction? Can anyone offer an explanation? Is it "lawful" in the first extract and, if not, what is it?

I'd be delighted to know what anyone can make of this
