I realize that I am late in posting a reply to this thread, but I just happened upon your note in researching George Birchell's Civil War records.  I am a 2x great-grandaughter of George H Birchell and his 3rd wife - Janet Howat (widow of Robert Wilson).
My grandmother did extensive research on the Birchell and Howat families.  Copies of her books have circulated around, and perhaps your New England relatives have, or have had, a copy.
George H Birchell (son of David Birchell and Sarah Braidwell) born 22 Jan 1835
Married 1st Lydia Hiland (Hyland) 9 Jun 1854
Arrived in 1854 - worked in a mill in Shirley Massachusetts; sent for wife and daughter Hannah
Two sons (David and John Thomas) born and died while in Shirley;
Son George B born in Harvard MA 1860
At some point the family moved south to Rhode Island.
George enlisted as a Pvt in the 9th RI Inf on 26 May 1862, served as a cook in the defenses around Washington DC.
I do not have a picture of George, but do have a photo of his wife Janet Howat, of his daughter Jessie Birchell Wright, and his son-in-law Norman Wright.
Don't know if any of this information helps at all, but digging up roots is interesting!
