Thank you for your replies.

nanny jan - an overseer, would that be like a farm/estate manager or a farm bailiff?

Colin - sorry my mistake! the DoD is 31/07/1862.

Further to my post about my GG GF Archibald Macdonald made sometime ago, I have found out that his father was Donald the Grieve of Clianaig (1773-31/7/1882).
I was wondering if 'the Grieve' means anything? Can anyone enlighten me please? Thank you.
Kevin.

Hi Monica,
Thanks again for all your help - it is appreciated.
I will certainly contact Mr Briscoe and seek his advice re the crofts. It will certainly be interesting to see if he can help me in my quest to find the exact location of the old family croft.
All the best,
Kevin.

Hi Monica,
Thank you ever so much for providing all that information/references it really was appreciated.
Very interesting about the crofts and what the Crofters could and could not do - how they actually survived I just don't know - and in my Great Great Grandfather's case with 10 children! I note the ref to 2 Crofters having 2 crofts each - by 1856 my G G Grandfather also had crofts 6 & 7, he must have been doing something right!!
I have the date of my G G Grandfather's death as 29/11/1887, as his eldest son, Donald, stayed on the croft until his death in 1916 I assume that Archibald died on the croft and was buried locally in Spean Bridge?
Cille Choirill - great set of photos there. I was pleased to see that there was a plaque to Major Donald MacDonell of Tirnadris re the first skirmish of the '45 at High Bridge. Is there a plaque at the site of the old High Bridge itself? I intend to try and visit that site as well.
All the best,
Kevin.

Hi Neale,
Thank you for your detailed reply - much appreciated.
My Uncle Colin visited John MacGillivantic after the war and was told that the family croft lay across the end of his back field but I don't know where that was and my Uncle has since passed on.

Could you kindly let me know where I could find out where my Great Great Grandfather, Archibald, was buried? I had thought that he might lay with his ancestors at Cille Choirill ( a place that I intend visiting) but as I understand that this is an ancient burial ground that seems unlikely.
Thank you for all your help.
All the best,
Kevin.

Hi Neale,
Thank you for your reply. I don't think that that is my family. My Great Great Grandfather Archibald of Highbridge (1809-29/11/87) married Ann MacArthur of Achluachrach the daughter of Donald the Weaver. they had 10 children - Donald 1839-1916 unmarried, Alexander 1840-6/4/19049 (my Great Grandfather), Bella ( Isabel)1843, Mary 1845, Jessie, Archie, John, Angus, Margaret, Jane.
Is the turnpike road you mention the now A82 or is it the old Wade Military Road from Highbridge to Fort William?
The croft lease was authorised by the Earl of Aboyane. The rent was £5 per year, and allowed the keeping of no more than 3 cows and 1 horse.
All the best, Kevin.
