Hi Trish - I found those too :  doesn't look like there was a link to my folk.  But Vance - those links are great.    I had that 1791 birth - nonconformist - as a Quaker - which seemed a bit odd in the family as all other BDM's were Anglican.  But it certainly seems there was a William in each generation (just as there was a George in eevery one of the Coleman's).  My Eliza also had a brother William and a sister Caroline....
Oh and I found George Coleman  in the 1841 Census....  he was in Dalston (Middlesex)  https://www.ancestrylibrary.com.au/search/collections/8978/records/7681172   Registration district - St George in the East - His mother Sarah, brother Whitbread (mis-spelt in the transcript) and sister Ann were in the household.  Unfortunately his occupation is illegible.  His father was apparently elsewhere on census night.

Hi Trish.  The one who died in 1840 is the one whose will I have a copy of.  It's interesting, but it's not my family.  Not to worry... onward and upward!  The freeREG transcript for Whitbread and Ann's marriage  shows Lucy Stevens GRIPPER as a witness so I'm going to follow her up....  seems like there's another family connection there somewhere.

Thanks Vance.  This could certainly be Eliza's father.  I would love to read the article, but it's not among the titles in the British Library Newspaper archive that I have access to.  But the freeREG transcriptions were also helpful in terms of his changes in occupation over the years.

Wow - thanks Trish.  Yes -  I knew Whitbread was George's brother and that he married Eliza's sister and they all ended up in South Africa.  Whitbread and family stayed there the rest of their lives, but George and Elizaz moved on to South Australia after only 7 years.  If George and Whitbread's father is a gent, does that mean he's made enough money so he no longer needs to work?    I don't know how I failed to come across William and Ann's deaths in famiilysearch - but so glad you did!  Pieces are starting to come together.

Thanks all.  Yes the marriage cert would be helpful, but the cost is too high for me.  I can't identify my George in the 1841 census, but Eliza was in the household of a farmer William Overell in Aspenden - a governess I believe.  As the will mentioned above makes no mention of any of the 3 daughters I know of, I don't think it's from my man.... they were all young and unmarried at the time this will was made.

George and Eliza are my great great grandparents.  They were married in St Peter's Church Great Berkhamstead on 29 June 1842.  This detail is provided in a family Bible - nearest corroboration is a Civil registration record .  The Bible also tells me Eliza's parents were William and Ann Gripper of Hatfield, and Ann was the daughter of James Stevens of Irving Grove, Herts.  I can't find any information about him via Ancestry or Family Search.   In marriage notices in the newspapers, Eliza's father is shown as 'the late William Gripper' and Ann is not mentioned.  I have accessed a will for a William Gripper of Hertford who died in 1840 but the will doesn't name a wife or daughters so I don't think it's my man.  George Coleman's parents George Coleman and Sarah Whitbread were married at St Marylebone, Westminster on 9 March 1809 which is also where their son George was baptised on 5 August 1813.  Can anyone suggest how/ where I might search for more information about these people?  I'm trying to understand why George and Eliza migrated to South Africa soon after marrying.

I've attached an image of Eliza's baptism record - she was nearly 3 years old when she was baptised along with her sister Jane.  Her father's occupation is shown as Coal Merchant.

Thanks Maddy.  I've spent quite a while searching the family search SA records - both online and at their local centre here in Hobart.  But I hadn't found the insolvency record or the newspaper articles, which really help fill out the image I'm building of George.

Thanks again Maddy.   Yes - I have his parents' marriage and his baptism record.  I'm not willing to spend the money required for a full marriage record :  I have the civil registration list, so I'm confident I have the date and place correct - I've registered with the GRO though, so might order the certificate later.  I  have an ancestry membership but it doesn't cover South Africa ...  most of my family history involves the UK and Australia... so each of your links is a real gem.  Best wishes

Many thanks MaddyS.  The tickets and insolvency could be my George... and yes his brother Whitbread married Eliza's sister Ann and followed them to the Cape.  In fact, Whitbread stayed there...  I have a birth record for another of his children, which shows the father's occupation so I was hoping for that detail on the records for George junior and Harry.  Regarding George and Eliza's marriage :  I only have a listing in the Civil Registration Marriage Index.  I've been unable to find the parish record.  Thank you again - these records are great!
