Cumberland / Robert Marshall Kendal 1846 Military Desertion?
« on: Saturday 25 January 25 16:44 GMT (UK)  »
Hi all,

I found a record on ancestry entitled UK, Registers of Habitual Criminals and Police Gazettes, 1834-1934 potentially relating to my 3x G Uncle Robert Marshall born 1846 Kendal to Richard Marshall and Jane Beetham.

The only census record for Robert I have managed to find is the the 1851 census where he is 4 Years old living with his parents. There is only 1 death for a Robert Marshall in 1850 - he's on the 1851 census so I have discounted that.

The record states he was in the Manchester regiment and was charged with desertion in Ashton Under Lyme service number 1417 gives his birth date of 1846 and born in Kendal.

Here is a link to the record

https://www.ancestry.co.uk/search/collections/61812/records/254430?tid=194244452&pid=142647147866&ssrc=pt

So I am wondering if this is indeed him, or if I'm barking up the wrong tree.

Many thanks for any potential help

Edward's army file in case you don't have it (many pages including his death certificate): https://search.findmypast.co.uk/record?id=GBM%2FWO363-4%2F007272978%2F01039&parentid=GBM%2FWO363-4%2F7272978%2F93%2F1039

Oddly, the two children born in India (Margaret and Arthur) are not listed.

He was in India for three years 1893-1896.

The file also includes his home service in WW1.

Thanks for this, I think I've already seen it on ancestry it's full of great information. Interesting his wife on the 1921 census is saying she's a widow and father is dead but he was very much alive. They must have split up by then. I suppose having 11 children and constantly being on the move (Ireland, India, London, Carlisle, Dover etc) had probably taken their toll.

Had a go at your second photo, dippitybix, but I couldn't make a lot of sense out of it, I'm afraid; I couldn't effectively distinguish detail from damage and it may be that at some stage someone has taken a photo of a photo (or of a photocopy) at an angle so that parts of the image look out of proportion.
Anyway, at least the faces come up reasonable.
Cheers,
Peter

Thanks so much Peter, yes I agree I think it was a copy of a copy but you've done a great job. I wonder what the little girl is holding in her hands?

Free Photo Restoration & Date Old Photographs / Thompson Carlisle & India 1880-1890
« on: Monday 20 January 25 11:37 GMT (UK)  »
Hi all, would anyone be able to help with the images attached.

The first image is of my GG Grandfather Edward Thomas Thompson born 1870 St Pancras, London, his wife Isabella Fulton born 1871 Cummersdale, Carlisle and their daughter Maud born 1888 Carlisle. This photo is believed to have been taken in Carlisle in 1888/9.

Edward was a solider in the Border Regiment, I believe he was a drummer and served in India as the couple had two children born there. They had 11 in total.

The second is reportedly Maud Thompson with her uncle  Arthur Thompson taken in Mooltan India 1897. Although I am not sure this is correct, I believe it could be Edward as I cannot find any information for an Arthur Thompson. No birth registrations for an Arthur Thompson with mother's maiden name Partridge and no Arthur Thompson living with the family in census returns etc. Both these images were taken from a family tree on ancestry some years ago.

Any help greatly appreciated I think they have been scanned/copied many times so not the best quality.

Births for Leigh came within Rochford RD.  If you check the censuses I mention you will see that was given as her birthplace.  No other Louisa Partridge b 1871 +- 2yrs has Leigh as their birthplace on census entries.

https://www.ukbmd.org.uk/reg/districts/rochford.html

She is with relatives in Hackney in 1891 plus 2 of her siblings

Thanks Carole, is that with her brothers Eli and Samuel? And I think with her aunt Sarah Bellamy

1871/1881/1891 show birthplace as Leigh Essex.

1901 there is a Louisa Partridge b Leigh - single - 29 ??  No other birth fits that birthplace

Hi CaroleW, I think Leigh on Sea is only 5/6 miles from Rochford (acc to google maps).

Thanks for the son info  :)

Frederick was 4 years older than Louisa when they married so born c 1866

Yes,  their marriage certificate gives his occupation as a ships steward, perhaps thats why it's difficult to find there whereabouts?
