United States of America / Re: John Jones
« on: Sunday 21 April 24 15:13 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

Have been looking at the marriage in 1869 on familysearch.org and there are two different returns -

Both say John Johns age 31 a Miner (so born 1838/9) but one says Elizabeth J Lamson age 28 (so born 1841/2) and the other Elizabeth J Lampshire same age. The one showing Lamson is Image 258 of 605 (page 255 entry No 1) - Marriage return to the Hon Secretary of State of Michigan and the Lampshire Image No 44 of 665 (entry no 78) on the State of Michigan record.

On Free BMD and in Ancestry records there is an Elizabeth Jane  Lampshire born in Truro District Cornwall in Dec Quarter 1842 so it seems that  this John's wifes maiden name may have been Lampshire. The 1851 census show her as living in Gwennap with her mother Ann (a widow at the time). However maybe this marriage is not connected?

Making things more complicated there is an Elizabeth Andrews born Dec Quarter 1842 Redruth  District Cornwall and this district includes Gwennap!! More questions seem to follow the 1886 marriage to Martin Trewhella which shows her as age 33 (he was 26) - this seems to suggest she was born 1853 (but perhaps she was really 43?). If you could find a death record for her it might help.

Apologises if it is confusing.

Hi,

I have seen the post regarding the 1896 marriage for George Jones but think it is a different family,

Your George was born c 1831 and this George around 1871 (age 25 at date of marriage)'

Other than this I feel the other details shown seem to be making sense.

Sussex / Re: Richard Barton

Hi

FreeReg shows 2 entries for Richard Barton  in Sussex - one burial 22 March 1744/45 at Heathfield and another of Richd Barton, on 3 May 1745 at Angmering.

The Find a grave entries at Heathfield  don't seem to offer any help.

There is a will on Ancestry (relating to the one at Angmering) leaving  his estate to two married daughters - Did the son Richard have two daughters, Anne and Frances?

Hi,

Just for interest, it looks like Leney Ellen Crowther married in 1893 at West Derby (BMD shows her name as Lena) to James Archibald Kelynack.

She died Fylde area of Lancashire age 68 in June 1939,

Hi,

I am showing interest in this as like Garstonite I am also from Garston, although I now live near Manchester.

Interestingly the death of Harry Wilkins is on Free BMD and the National GRO system, showing the right age, is registered at Barton upon Irwell (Salford Area of Manchester) with reference December Quarter, Vol 08C Page 458. The burial details on Ancestry show Entry No 684 (1896-1900) at St Michaels, and his address as 131 Yew Tree (Walk?), Salford, buried 23 October 1899 age 54. You may wish to get this death certificate?

Mary Elizabeth Wilkens details show Entry No 145 (1900-1904) at St Michaels, address 135 New Park Road, Salford buried 3 April 1901 age 65 - Free BMD and GRO references show her as age 59 June Quarter, Vol 08D Page 89, District Salford - a discrepancy but it looks like the right person.

The Common Room / Re: john william whittaker -what are the chances?

Hi,

I was just going to say that I had a relative in the 71st Regiment of Foot who served in Ireland with a child born in Cloyne Ireland in 1824 and the next child was born in 1826 at Stoke Dameral in Devon.

No obvious rhyme or reason for it, as the next one was then born in Chatham Kent before the family moved north.

It seems quite likely that Stoke Dameral had some importance to troops returning from Ireland (perhaps as a staging post?) so I don't think the death suggested should be dismissed out of hand.

Hi,

In those days of illiteracy etc, I would imagine its easy to mix up Linton and Milton. Similarly a mix up between Eltham and Elmstone is potentially on the cards.

There is a Morris family Tree on Ancestry and it could be worth your while contacting them if you are an Ancestry member.

Their list of children to Thomas and Mary starts with George 1814 but they have either overlooked the birth of William in 1811 but never realised William is part of the family.

By the first census in 1841 William has gone his own way and married Sarah etc so it would be reasonable to not have picked him up from the early census details.

The birth dates tie in nicely for the Thomas/Mary marriage so if it was me I would contact the tree owner for his views.

Hi,

Another few thoughts -

William (born 1811) and Sarah's second child was named Thomas Morris (baptised 12 Feb 1841 at Reculver). This could be following a naming pattern for the first two children, following the potential father Thomas Morris (born in Linton in 1788; died there 1833) and his wife Mary (1788-1873), suggesting maybe this is the right path?

I think also that William's potential father Thomas married Mary Horton in 1810 and that William was their first born - they had many other children (including a George in 1814) which was the name of William and Mary Ann's third child.

A number of trees on Ancestry have tied the family is to what I believe is a different William Morris -born 1815 in High Halden and have him dying in Pluckley in 1892, He also has children named Mary A and Thomas but they like their father were born High Halden and the ages don't quite fit.

The more  i look at this the more I feel the William Morris in Linton seems a really good candidate. I  cannot see any other close possibility.

If you were to consider this and examine it closer, then there are trees on Ancestry going back a lot earlier (assuming they are correct of course)

Hi,

Regrettably, I don't know the area, however it seems to me that -

1. William Morris's wife Sarah Crayford was baptised 8 Feb 1818 at Selling, Kent daughter of William and Susan Crayford.
2. He and Sarah's first born Mary Ann Morris was baptised at St Peter and St Paul Church, Upper Hardres Court  on 1 Sept 1839 (Free Reg).
3, Mary Ann then married on 8 May 1859 at Fordwich, Kent  to William Homersham.
4. One of the Family Search records a marriage at Elmstone, Kent on 17 April 1836 and not as originally thought.

All these places are fairly closer together on Google Maps surrounding Canterbury so my thinking is that perhaps the search should be concentrated on that specific area?

Does this make sense?
