Hi All,

Thanks for your replies (and the welcome!). As Valda points out, there is too little information at the moment to either confirm or deny that Louisa of 1833 is the one I'm looking for. Nevertheless, the NZ connection and relatively uncoomon name mean that this avenue of research is perhaps one of the more likely ones...  I've been quite lucky when following these hunches in the past! Certainly large chunks of my family have come out to NZ in this way (ie. on the reccomendation of family or friends already residing here).
The birth entry record I have for H R Nelson was transcribed by a family member many years ago, so it's quite concievable that some information was ommitted (ie. an earlier married name for Louisa). I'll have to go and get a copy of the certificate from national archives to check...
Thanks for the offer of info. on Alexander, Jill. Anything you can provide would be great.

Cheers,
Graham.

Hi All,
I'm based in Auckland (New Zealand). My Great Great Grandfather was Harold Nelson. His birth register entry (18306/71) gives the following information:

Harold Rudolph Nelson
b. 12 Dec. 1871
Father: Nicholas Peter Nelson, Mariner
Mother: Louisa Nelson (nee Dabell)

Unfortunately, I know almost nothing about this branch of the family. I have no idea where Nicholas Nelson or Louisa Dabell came from, when they came to NZ (or if they were born here), or whether they were in fact married in NZ or the UK. I thus noted with interest the reference on a Rootsweb message board (http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.dabell/1/mb.ashx) to a Louisa Dabell who has family connections to NZ and was b.1833 at Nottingham. I'm rather hoping that this might be the Louisa I'm looking for (and this seems not an unreasonable theory)... Those posts refer to her father as being an Alexander Dabell- apparently the same individual referred to in this thread.

I've just made some searches on the NZ 'Papers Past' website which gives the following results:

Daily Southern Cross, Volume XIX, Issue 1934, 28 September 1863, Page 2: "...NAMES OF PASSENGERS PER SHIP 'TYBERNIA'...Ellen and Sophia Dabell ..."

Daily Southern Cross, Volume XXII, Issue 2759, 29 May 1866, Page 7: "...ARRIVAL OF THE SHIP 'ALEXANDRA' FROM LONDON...She brings the following second and third class passengers, having no cabin passengers oh board ;— ...W.Dabell..."

Daily Southern Cross, Volume XXIV, Issue 3322, 10 March 1868, Page 3: "...CROWN GRANTS. Crown grants in favour of the following persona are now ready for delivery at the office of the Registrar of Deeds, High-street, Auckland :— ...Alexander Dabell..."

I initially took this last entry to suggest that Alexander Dabell was in NZ (along with Ellen, Sophia and Elizabeth Rebecca). It occurred to me last night that this might not be the case- I’m not sure whether you had to be in NZ to receive a land grant so perhaps this was an absentee application for Ellen or the children?

I'm not sure who the mystery "...W.Dabell..." could be...

Hopefully this information is of use to someone. Likewise, I'd really appreciate any further info on the Nelsons or Dabells that anyone could be able to share. I’d particularly like to confirm (or refute) the link between Louisa and Alexander/Ellen; and confirm her marriage and emigration details.

Cheers,
Graham Anderson

Hi Rosemary,

That's fantastic news! I am really looking forward to the impending trade of information!
FYI, my relationship to John Benjamin Nevill is as follows:

John Benjamin Nevill (1770-?) = Milicent Tarratt
William Nevill (1808-1874) = Mary Oridge
William James Nevill (1841-?) = Christiana Flight
Christiana Nevill (1864-1951) = William Amelius Beauclerk Fyers
Amelius Beauclerk Fyers (1885-1958)
Margaret Fyers  = George Anderson
Hugh Anderson = Rona Pearce
Graham Anderson - Me!

;D ;D ;D

...this library also has the handwritten notes of Canon Edmund Robert Nevill (1862-1933), the author of the Nevills of Suffolk report...

That answers a couple of questions. I have a copy of a many-times-photocopied letter from Ralph Nevill (b. 1845) written in 1915. The letter refers to an article which had recently been published in "The Genealogist" and mentions that "...ERN was anxious to get something on record before he went to New Zealand..." From your post it appears that the "ERN" mentioned must have been Edmund Robert Nevill. It's great to hear that his notes have survived and are available.
This letter came to me via a small booklet prepared by a fourth cousin of mine as a school project about 15 years ago. The booklet is not particularly detailed, but has been fantastic as it refers to a large number of resources. FYI it appears to have drawn from the notes and research of Geoffrey Nevill (1879-1972), his father William James Nevill (1841-?, my 3xGreat Grandfather); and the correspondance between WJN. and his brother Ralph (b. 1845).
Some of the principal resources I have so far identified include:
1. "The Genealogy of the Nevills of Suffolk" (as previously mentioned).
2. Articles on "The Genealogist" issues of January 1907 and possably late 1914/early 1915.
3. Foss' "British Judges" - gives a significant amount of Nevill biographical info.
4. "The Nevills" (as mentioned above- I am unsure exactly which cousin of mine wrote this) - gives a good outline of my branch of the Nevills in New Zealand

Of these I have so far only managed to access items 3 and 4.

Cheers,
Graham

Hi All,
I have just joined rootschat, and am very interested to see this entry regarding the Nevills:

Fa John Nevill
Mo Elizabeth ?Tring
children:
John Benjamin Nevill b1770
David Nevill b1772
Jonathan Nevill b1774 (my ancestor)

cheers
Rosemary

The John Benjamin Nevill mentioned (son of John Nevill and Elizabeth) is a 5x Great Grandfather of mine. I have a reasonably detailed tree of his decendants, but of his ancestors I have found many conflicts in the information I have been able to locate. I understand that there is a book called "The Genealogy of the Nevills of Suffolk" which reliably establishes the line back to 1658 (confirmed by will information), and possably as far back as 1398 with less reliability. Unfortunatey, I have not yet found a copy of this book (have been too busy working on other projects to look for it!).
Anyway, I'd be interested to see what others have been able to find, both of the ancestors and decendants of these Nevills. I could prepare a ged file on my branch of the Nevills also if anyone was interested.

Cheers,
Graham
