Hi Julieann

I cannot help with any certificate for your enquiry, but I know where the old Smsllholm toolbar used to be and have a few records and the odd old map which may be if interest to you. I also have records from the the valuation rolls, but these start in the late 19th Century from memory.

I will have a look for you and come back.

Cheers

Canada / 1914/15 photograph of Canadian soldiers
« on: Monday 30 March 15 21:25 BST (UK)  »
Hi folks,

Can anyone confirm whether the soldiers photographed in the image attached dating from 1914/15 is of the 8th battery Canadian Field Artillery. I cannot make out the badges... Hopefully someone with keener eyes may be able to advise..

Thanks in advance

Thanks to all those offering the codes - the scotlandspeople codes no longer function, but the FindMyPast ones seem to still be active.  I now have some top up in which to review some much awaited research, so thank fellow researchers.

Happy Hunting.

Hi folks,

After a visit to a local reference library recently, I was again reminded of the importance of not assuming anything when it comes to the early UK census records taken in 1801, 1811, 1821 and 1831 viz. thinking they were only head counts. For the most part, this was regrettably the case.  However, I know of examples where enumerators have gone beyond the minimum requirement and have listed names and ages (although like the later 1841 census, there was a practice of rounding ages to nearest five years). So, the point of this post is really to remind people to seek out these early records, and if they exist at the local reference archive libraries for example - go and check them out. Check out all those parishes of interest. You may be surprised by how diligent some of the enumerators were more than two hundred years ago, and never forget to look at the enumerator's name on all census log books - where these exist.  A friend of mine for years could not trace his maternal several time great grandparent (although he was able to trace the rest of the immediate family).  By sheer chance whilst looking at a log taken by the enumerator for one of the census (I don't which one it was), an elusive name appeared...

There is a common belief out there that these early censuses have only limited genealogical value. For some areas, this is a complete fallacy; but for me such thinking goes against the empirical academic value of research, research, research and my advice is:

'never assume that something you have not seen has little to offer'.

You never know, what you may find...

Happy Hunting.

Dumfriesshire / Re: Catherine Galloway
« on: Saturday 19 January 13 22:44 GMT (UK)  »
Hi Julie,

I'm not sure I can offer much direct help, but the name Catherine Galloway ( my 6 x great grandmother) and that of the quite unusual name Montgomery (a girls name in my ancestral lineage and boys middle name in your cited case) and the era in Lochmaben are surely too many matches or similarities to be coincidence...

My 6 x great grandmother Catherine Galloway is not your Catherine as she was a daughter to James Galloway and Fergusia Montgomery.  My Catherine was born 1757 and later married my 6 x ggf James Green.  Given the names you cite as the parents of your Catherine, and the surnames of my 7 x ggf and ggm Galloway and Montgomery - does this explain where your William's name derives

It is entirely possible that your William Montgomery Galloway is a sibling to my 6 x ggf Catherine Galloway.

As far as emigration records are concerned I do not think Ancestry helps much as the information you provides indicates that she emigrated circa 1854/5, at least I cannot trace her on the immigration lists...

I haven't tried looking or researching to see even if such records are held locally in Dumfriesshire ( to account for immigration passages etc), but it may prove useful for you to make email contact with the Ewart Library and its archivists to ascertain if they hold anything along these lines...

The Ewart Library is a fine old sandstone building in Dumfries and details can be viewed online here:-

Please do let me know if any of the above strikes any bells or possible links...

Kind Regards
Kenny

Dumfriesshire / Re: English Street, Dumfries 1890's

Hi Cupcake,

I hope you are still enjoying your research. It may be worthwhile contacting Dumfries and Galloway Council's Conservation officer - it used to be a Volkmar Nix (I'm not sure if he is still about though). This may be a worthwhile avenue to explore whether the Council has photographs of the old listed building.  Failing that, it may also be useful to search Historic Scotland's database as they too hold extensive records including old photographic imagery of the nations listed buildings.

Good luck and happy hunting!

Hi All,

MNB - I presume you are Mike, and if so, I hope you are well and had an enjoyable trip to Northern Ireland earlier in the summer. In case you are unsure who I am, I am your third cousin a few times removed, Kenny.

Waughboy - I have heard a few people have been very impressed with your website. Wel done, it looks great! I hope to look over it in more detail over the course of the next week or so (when I shall be taking a few days off work to try and get my various notes and info saved electronically) I shall be accessing your site to get my Green lineage in a semblance of order.

The closing question you leave hanging Waughboy is certainly something to aim for... I think finding James Green's (born c.1756) parents will depend upon finding his definitive baptismal date. Perhaps this is recorded in the OPR kept at the NAS in Edinburgh. I understand that the record collection for Applegarth and sibbaldbie is 813a and the OPR start in 1749 !!

If anyone is going to Edinburgh soon, perhaps this might be worthy of a couple hours of study...

Kind Regards,
Kojak

Hi, I have lots on this, need more!!!
You still looking?

Hi,

Do you have lots for Christinabell or do my listed Staffords ring any bells with you? I am still very keen on learning more about my Stafford lineage from Adamstown, Enniscorthy Co. Wexford.

Thanks,
