Yes TGC had been in the army, so he may have married outside England somewhere.

According to Northaw BTs

Henry Charles s/o TG and MM Clapham was baptised 6 Jun 1803.
Mary Magdalen Clapham buried 20 May 1803
Thomas Green Clapham buried 6 Oct 1803.

No daughter baptised 17 Jul that I can see.

With both parents dying close to each other, the children would have been brought up by TGC's three sisters who were living in Watford, and may have thought Henry Charles had not been baptised and had him done again.

England / Thomas Green CLAPHAM marriage 1797-1799

Trying to find the marriage of Thomas Green CLAPHAM to Mary Magdalen ??, sometime just prior to 1799-1800.

Their first child was named Thomas Picton CLAPHAM born 1800, so her maiden name could have been PICTON. Thomas Green CLAPHAM's mother's maiden name was GREEN.

Second child born Westminster Sep 1801

Third child born Northaw, Hertfordshire May 1803.

She was buried at Northaw, Hertfordshire on 20 May 1803, probably from childbirth complications.

Thanks

William Willoughby COMINS is interesting.

His first wife was Mary Anne Comins STEVENS, daughter of Thomas Howell STEVENS and Mary COMINS.

His second wife was Catherine Ann CLAPHAM.

His third wife was Margaretta Arscott STEVENS, sister of his first wife. Marrying your dead wife's sister was still frowned upon in England still and they were married in New York.

Yes it is her. Downloaded image of death cert and it says she was widow of William Henry Clapham, solicitor.

Think I might have found her death.

An Elizabeth CLAPHAM died 6 Mar 1891 in Hammersmith. Probate was granted to her nephew Charles Bridges STEVENS of Reading, Berkshire.

Charles Bridges STEVENS, born in Eton in 1848, is a son of Thomas Howell STEVENS and Mary COMINS, sister of Elizabeth.

Where was she in 1861, 1871 and 1881 census.

He added a codicil in May 1858 and Elizabeth was still around then.

All of the Elizabeth Clapham deaths from then until late 1859 were in Yorkshire apart from one in Lincoln.

If she was still in London in 1861 she may have been in one of the areas where the 1861 census has been lost. Couple of marriages in the 1860s in London, but not her.

Just received William Henry Clapham's will.

Apart from a number of legacies to a number of his American cousins and his wife's siblings, he leaves pretty much everything to his nieces Catherine and Mary Clapham, with income to his dear wife Elizabeth, so she was still alive.

WW Comins was his partner in his law firm.

Suspect she may have gone back to Witheridge.

Will keep digging.

Yes I am.

Thomas Picton Clapham, who was the one in Sandal Magna. Married Hannah Knowles.

William Henry Clapham was the informant when his brother Henry Charles died.
