Wigtownshire / Re: Miln Dam Rd and Whirry Park Isle of Whithorn Query.

Hello all

If we assume that the "Highway leading to the Harbour" (as seen on the OS Six inch map 1843-1882) is now known as the B7004, then there is a row of houses on the South side of the road that are likely candidates for the first property on what would have been Buyoch land. Given the description of it being bounded on the East by a house and the West by a yard it seems likely that it is the house on the NW end of the row now known as Number 1/ Bowling Green House. It would be worth trying to verify/ disprove this theory with documentary evidence of some kind.

Aberdeenshire / Re: Aberdeenshire Newspaper Clippings

I'm afraid I no longer have access to the newspaper clippings, I had transcribed and posted a lot of what I had so searching this post/ this site should find anything I did have.

The local history centre in Elgin is an amazing resource and does have most of these papers in their archives. http://libindx.moray.gov.uk/mainmenu.asp

Good luck with your searches.

On the basis of information from this page
http://www.forthdistrict.co.uk/villages-history/woolfords/woolfords-history.html
I think the house you want is probably on one of the later blocks if no more than 8 houses to a block were built.

The National Library of Scotland has some very useful map overlays.

https://maps.nls.uk/geo/explore/#zoom=17&lat=55.79664&lon=-3.58728&layers=170&b=1

Also using google street view you can see some house numbers (number 21 and 22 have signs up on the road side of the house). On the basis of that I think number 28 might be the middle house of the third block as you go north.

Hope this helps.

Never mind, mis-read the original post.

Hi,

Looks like Halifax to me.

Not exactly a seaport, though...

Let's see what the experts say.  :)

Best regards,
Karen

Halifax in Nova Scotia is a Sea Port. It is likely that it refers to that one.

Thank you for such a comprehensive series of posts. I had a lot of that information but not in a well organised format as yet. I did not know that Gowanlea was on the site of the previous building, that might explain why I couldn't find it on maps.

Thank you Graham. I have been trying to corroborate George's parents for some time. It is lovely to have the picture too, very grateful.

I am fairly sure that Christian and Margaret are sisters of George but was hunting for evidence for the others. MI are very useful for that!

Thanks again.

Aberdeenshire Completed Lookups / Duncan MIs Fyvie
« on: Monday 20 April 20 10:32 BST (UK)  »
Good morning

I was hoping that someone might be able to let me know the details of the inscription on Stone 508 in Kirkyard of Fyvie (AA136 according to the ANESFHS website).

It should have Ann Duncan, Agnes Ferguson and Alexander Duncan mentioned.

I am hoping it will help me with my Duncan brick wall.

Midlothian / Re: Edinburgh parish burial records - 1799.

According to The Epitaphs and Monumental Inscriptions in Greyfriars Churchyard, Edinburgh (free on google books as an ebook) there was an entry for "The Hon Andrew M'Dowal of Bankton* (no inscription)" so Greyfriars Kirkyard is the correct burial ground.

https://books.google.co.uk/books?id=15EZAAAAYAAJ&dq=greyfriars&pg=PA220#v=onepage&q=andrew&f=false

Hopefully this publication might help you find the entry you are looking for.
