Hi Carole,

I will look them up on Ancestry to save you the time. Thanks for the offer.

JB.

Wow, thanks I hadn't spotted that.

That's the third child from that family who was left with relatives while they brought up the rest. I guess it could have been census night but there is certainly a pattern emerging.

Thanks again,
JB.

Yorkshire (North Riding) Lookup Requests / Whitby Marriage 1888 (Hoggarth, Gibson)
« on: Wednesday 12 December 07 13:48 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,

If anyone has access to parish records for Whitby in 1888, I'd really appreciate a lookup of this marriage:

Frances Mary Gibson and Frank Hoggarth

It's in the GRO for Whitby Sep-Dec 1888, vol94 894.

I'm moving sideways here to investigate non-blood relations from this family, who grew up and lived with my own ancestors. For that reason I can't really justify purchasing certificates for all of the offshoots, but nevertheless would like to be sure I'm looking at the correct people. So I'm hoping there will be a parish register containing Whitby marriages without resorting to the GRO every time.

Many thanks,
JB.

If anyone has access to Pittington registers, I'd really appreciate a lookup on this marriage:

John Henderson = Ann Dawson 5 Feb 1860

I have the GRO certificate but no father is listed for Ann. I'm hoping there might be some extra information in the register that might help me go back further with her.

Many thanks,
JB.

Cumberland / Re: Researching Graham and Armstrong
« on: Saturday 14 April 07 00:54 BST (UK)  »
Maria1,

I also found a family on the IGI for a Thomas Graham c1760 and Eleanor Armstrong c1762 both born in Crossbanks,Lowfield and Kirkland with son David born c1792 in Torpenhow. Other children include John c1787, Jane c1789, Mary c1794 and Eleanor c1797 all born in Torpenhow.

Very interesting. I've been trying to find a baptism for my John Graham born c1790 who lived in Gilcrux, Torpenhow and Plumbland. There are so many John Grahams to choose from that this is a rather difficult process, but I hadn't spotted one in Torpenhow itself. I'd be interested to know if you have any further details on the son John c1787, if only so I can rule him out. My John Graham married an Esther Sharp.

All the best,
JB.

Cumberland / Re: Grahams of Workington

It may just be the popularity of these surnames in the area but I have a line including Grahams, Sharps and Hodgsons in Cumberland (though I haven't found any in Workington yet). My direct ancestors are John Graham b ~1790 who married Esther Sharp, who I believe was the one baprised 1792 in Bowness (there were rather a lot of Sharps in Bowness around this time). John and Esther married in Gilcrux, later living in Plumbland.

I believe (but haven't yet been able to confirm) that Esther Sharp's parents were Jeremiah Sharp and Mary Hodgson. Incidentally, I believe these Sharps are connected to the Russell family who moved from Cumberland to Birkenhead via a Sarah Sharp from Parsonby, Cumberland. All I know about this family is the fact that Sarah is listed on this chap's family history site:

http://www.cartar.com/families/russell_england/russell_family.htm

I thought that might be interesting due to your Birkenhead connection.

I'm still trying to piece the story of my Grahams/Sharps/Hodgsons together and can't quite find the evidence to confirm my theories, so would love to speak to anyone researching the same folk.

JB.

Kent Completed Lookup Requests / Re: WISE family: Newington Kent
« on: Tuesday 06 March 07 01:04 GMT (UK)  »
Just wanted to add to this:

Checked Newington parish registers
 baps
William  ( a farrier ) and Mary Ann Wise
  # 407  Feb 21 1830     Henry
   #465  Mar 25  1832    Ann Hannah
   #525   May 18 1834    Elizabeth  Rebecca
  No marriages /burials  1825-1840

I was PMed by a second kind soul who also looked up the Newington registers; it appears that the 1836 baptism of William Wise is in the Newington registers as well, though they didn't provide the exact date.

Hi Val,

Yes I've been using the Lythe parish registers available on CD. I think they are also on Ancestry these days. I'll check whether my CD contains the Loftus records.
