Free Photo Restoration & Date Old Photographs / Re: Scanning - Glass Portraits
« on: Friday 08 July 11 05:52 BST (UK)  »
Thank you China on two counts ... Now I know what the correct terminology is for them as well as knowing I can scan them.

Having been given the correct name allowed me to look at others and determine if they are painted portraits or ambrotypes and they are in fact ambrotypes..... Having looked at other photos on here I think I will put the one that is scratched on here at least to see what sort of a job any of you can do with it..... It's a picture of my 3x Great Grandfather and the only image we have of him so I'm keen to preserve it as best I can and hopefully look at it often.

Thank you so much, I will upload it in the next couple of days :-)

Free Photo Restoration & Date Old Photographs / Scanning - Glass Portraits
« on: Friday 08 July 11 03:44 BST (UK)  »
Hi

I have some family portraits that are almost, if not already, 100 years old, they are painted on glass and I'm wondering if anyone knows if scanning these will damage them in any way. I have an Epson v700 flatbed I'm wanting to scan them with as just a standard scan and also using the ICE technology on a second scan to see if I can clean up any scratches with that as the oldest one that would be over 100 years old if heavily scratched.

At present I have them wrapped in a towel in a drawer because I haven't had the money, nor do I know who to take them to to have them framed in a manner that is fitting to their age. I'd like to scan them so I can share them with family and also admire them myself, seems a shame to have these images of family tucked away for so long and not looked at but I'm worried the form of light from the scanner may damage them.

I'd be most grateful if anyone who has worked with these types of portraits can tell me if the scanner process is likely to damage them or not.

Cheers in Advance

Hi

I hope people are still around who created this thread  ??? ... I have just been searching Lavinia Emma Urne when I stumbled upon this thread in a Google search and I noticed the mention of a Rebecca searching for her and her father James..... I think that may have been me unless someone else called Rebecca is searching too, what a coincidence that would be..... I was on Genes Reunited many years ago and had her listed in some of my information and the fact that I was searching for her..... My membership lapsed and on top of that I had found a bit of a nasty side to Genealogy with some people so I decided to cancel my membership at GR and just fly solo.

Elsie, I'd love to know your cnnection to James....... Lavinia Emma Urne is my Great Great Grandmother. Lavinia was born 23 October, 1845 Islington London and married Thomas Shepherd in 1869, Thomas and Lavinia's child Annie Mary Shepherd is my Great Grandmather who married Arthur Thompson, Arthur and Annie's child Leonard Thomas Thompson is my Grandfather..... There is very little information on James I have come across and if anyone has been able to add any further to him I would be most grateful to have contact with them..... What I have found about the Urne family name is that it originates in Cornwall, not sure if anyone else has information or that connection too but I'd love to chat and see if we could substantiate that information.

Cheers in Advance .... Bec  :D

Oh WOW, I had William, James and Caroline but I didn't have John. I tried searching the exact spelling of Glazbrook but because I was doing an exact spelling the system told me I had to give a first name so I just searched the ones I knew...... However.......

I have systematically gone through the BDM Index knowing where they all lived roughly and purchased a whole lot of certificates that I knew or had a VERY strong belief were connected to William (1813). I have had one death certificate for a John Glazbrook who died of Scarlet Fever in 1838 which shows James Glazbrook (brother of deceased, residing same house) as the informant, I was quite certain that this James the brother was my GGG Grandfather's brother but without some form of concrete evidence that John was born to the same parents I didn't want to make assumptions. Thank you for confirming that the John I have on this certificate is infact another brother. The address on the certificate is 47 St Vincent Street and the age at death matches the birth and baptism you have shown.

I had looked at that 1841 listing in the census before and it is a common variant, James married in 1839 and John had passed I'm assuming their parents had either passed or were not at that residence the day the census was done.

I was told this board would be a great deal of help for me and I'd be amazed by what I find but when I posed the question on St Leonards I had no idea of the kind of help others would be willing to give or that I would be able to fit more pieces to the puzzle so quick.

I've also leart so much more about how to use the LDS site. I use Legacy and know how valuable what they do is but I had no idea to the extent their information can be used.

Thanks Heaps

Thank you once again Valda and thanks for the heads up on the sub districts etc. I'm still learning the geographical sides of genealogy when it comes to England, I had no idea I was going to learn so much geography.

Yes I did mean after 1837 BMD however my GGG Grandfather I know was born 1813 and christened 1814 with exact dates but I've also found a few variants of Glazbrook earlier than 1837 on other online sources but I want to go through carefully myself and see where connections are and are not. This is one part of my family that has eluded me and as such has made me even more determined to find out all I can about them. My Grandmother passed last year and she was the last one to carry the name in her line which is another reason I am so Keen to do this in depth and with great care before it is lost.

Your points and help have been invaluable Thank You.

Thanks so much Valda, that was just the info I needed. I have notbeen able to get that info from anyone else and believe me I have spent hours and hours sending e-mails and searching the web for just a glimps of what you have given me.

It is the St Leonards of Shoreditch I am after, I've seen reference to my 3x Great Grandfather being born or baptised in St Leonards Shoreditch and have found many other Glazbrooks (in all variants) being born in Shoreditch in the BMD Index.

I really said CD because it is an easy accessable form of info and I thought I had exhausted all avenues online.

The FHCs, being in Australia would I be able to get a hold of these records through them??? I know we have one very close by but haven't made it there to check it out yet.

Thanks again for all the help with this.

I'm hoping someone here can help me with these particular records.

I'm looking for somwhere I maybe able to purchase these records on Data CD. I know that there are two societies that have them on CD but they are in England (I'm in Australia) and no one knows where I could purchase from. I do know from message boards there are other Aussies wanting to gain access to these records.

One of the societies does lookups but I have extensive family connections in this parish and there are many variants to the name I'm wanting to search so paying someone to research for me or having someone else do the work just doesn't work for me. I kinda want to leave no stone unturned and know in my own mind that is so.

I've e-mailed so many places I felt sure to be able to help like the church only to either have the e-mails bounce or be sent in another direction, while there are Data CDs in existence no one knows where to obtain them.

I'd be ever so greatful to anyone who could shed some light.

Thanks so much for the warm welcome. I wasn't expecting to find other Aussies here so quick, let alone South Aussies. I feel at home already.

Uhm...Barbara...... I think my Hubby would agree with you on the addiction bit  :P :P. I'd better not let him know I've found this site LOL  :-X :-X :D

Looking forward to getting to know you both along the way.
