Many thanks for your time, I know how valuable it is when you go to Record Offices.

Europe / GERMANY: BLANKE Surname Hannover/Westfalen
« on: Wednesday 13 December 06 08:34 GMT (UK)  »
Following on from my post on 2nd Dec (From Hamburg to London 1836) and the help I received I believe I may have now found Johann Heinrick's christening in Krange, Westfalen and therefore his parents (if it is him of course).

Johann arrived in the UK 2nd Sept 1836 on the ship Columbine and after looking at census details and knowing he died in 1871 at 48 years of age he would only have been about 13 when he arrived in the UK.  Was it usual for children this age to travel without their parents and if so why?  On the Certificate of Arrival there are 8 people.  The first one is Johann Heinrich JACKMAN and the others are Claus MULLER, Carl Heinrich SCHLAUR, Johann COERS ?, Claus OTTO ?, Johann Heinrich BLANK(E), Claus Heinrich HOLTZEN & Johann *** CARDS?  The signature of the bearer at the bottom is Johann Heinrich JACKMAN.  Would he have been looking after the other 7 boys/men?

A lady on another list has told me that there were independent agents or agencies who would recruit workers from "foreign" lands.   She wondered about the term "Hambro" (this is on the certificate under “From what Country last arrived”) and thinks it may refer to England itself. She also told me that Hambro was a United Synagogue effort, based in London, who sponsored Jewish refugees from other countries to immigrate to London.  This would definitely be worth thinking about if the IGI Johann was not the correct one.

If he said he came from Hannover (sugarbakers web site), would this have covered Westfalen?  I would also like to find out more above German refugees coming to the UK in the early 1800’s but have been unable to find anything on the www that was easy to understand.

If anyone can help me on any of the above I would be very grateful.

Hi everyone,

What a great bunch of people!

I would like to say an enormous thank you  :)  :)  to everyone for their invaluable help in my search for this family.  I am now in contact with a 2nd cousin, something which I never thought would be possible especially in under a week!

Wishing you all a great Christmas.

Thanks again.

Can't resist popping back here to check on things  :D  You have all been very busy and given me lots more information - thank you.

Looking at the photos I have of when they were over here they do look as though they were in their 60's.

Not sure about the date of the strikes though, they don't marry up with the letter as Mum wasn't born until 1922, after the strikes and yet Ellen refers to Mum by name so it must have been after she was born.  Mind boggling  :D

Hi again,

Have read the letter again which consists of 2 pages, I now realise there are two letters (I think).  The first one is dated 11 May 1925 and is on an A4 or similar ruled piece of paper and finishes with Yours sincerely down the left hand side.  Afraid no clues on that one.  Really enquiring as to how my Mum was (she would have been 3).  The other piece of paper is probably the second page of a letter so I don't know the date but could have been earlier than 1925 as Ellen is saying that had she been in the UK she would have taken Mum from the hospital as they badly wanted a girl and were considering adopting one if they couldn't get home for Mum.  She talks about having just had a railway strike and there is now talk of the seaman striking.

This letter was sent to my great grandmother who was looking after Mum and was found by Mum after her grandmother died in 1962 at the age of 97!  It would have been just after Charles & Ellen came over looking for Mum.

Afraid that's all I know.

Now to put the Xmas decorations up !  :D   ;D   ::) :)

Jenn – Thanks for looking, it would be good to find them somewhere but maybe my contacting Gregory Nordberg will turn up something.  I found an old email address (1997) for him on the www and sent him a message but it bounced, but I did notice the home address was the same as on the quite pages.  Will definitely get a letter off to him today.  Also noted your comments regarding Reginald’s date of birth – you could be right, hadn’t thought of that!

Trish – I had missed L M Nordberg also living in Bundaberg, just focussed on G L so thanks.  Lancelot Magnus will be almost 84 now so think I will stick to writing to Gregory.

Christine – Thanks for the info on Weymouth.  Have found on the www that there is a memorial in Weymouth to all the Australians & New Zealanders who were accommodated in camps there.  It also talks about war brides being taken back to Australia.

Can’t thank you all enough for your help  :)

Thanks Trish!  I tend to be able to put my thoughts down on paper a lot easier than speaking to someone, especially over the phone so I think it will be snail mail.  Will try and put something together on paper tonight and include my email address.

Wish me luck  :D

Must admit I'm really excited now  :D

Looking on the website you sent me Christine, there is a Gregory Lance Nordberg, son of Lancelot Magnus.  On the white pages site Trish there is an address for a G L  Nordberg in Queensland so think I will have to try snail mail next!
