That's very useful, thank you both.  I didn't know about Thomas in 1804.  I will investigate further!

Devon / Georgeham - HANCOCK and PHILLIPS

John Phillips married Johanna Han(g)cock in 1802 in Georgeham.  They moved to Woolwich, Kent in about 1808.  I wonder if they had any children in Georgeham before then, and also I would like to find information about their parents.  I'd love to hear if anyone else is following these lines.

Suffolk / Robson in Lowestoft

Does anyone have any connections with the name Robson in Lowestoft?  I have a William Robson who married in Lewisham, Kent, in 1803 but the record states he came from Lowestoft.  He was born about 1775-1780.  Can anyone shed any light on this?  And why did he travel from Suffolk to London?  He became a waterman on the Thames, so I imagine he was a sailor or similar.  Many thanks.

Hi Ceeoh,

Wow, thanks so much for all this.  I am sorting out in my head all these families, very exciting.  I am pleased I have found a relative, albeit many times removed, etc, John and Mary (Winstanley) Porteous being my g-g-g-g-grandparents.  I believe we may have the same US contact, the descendant of my Mary's sister, Jane.  I know we need to search out these Winstanleys, and as you say there is not much information out there.  I live a long way from Cumbria so, even though I would love to visit the local Record Office, there is not much chance of that, for a while anyway.  I am no nearer to discovering why my Mary moved down to Kent, but if I learn anything further about the Winstanleys I will of course let you know.

Hello Ceeoh,

This is very exciting, thank you for this!  So the Winstanleys are your g-g-grandparents?  They are my g-g-g-grandparents!  Are you from down the James/Margaret line then?  I am looking into these Glovers and will let you know what I discover!  Thanks again.

I've just logged back in to RootsChat after nearly a year and read this thread - thanks to you all very much for your messages.  I'm still digging to find why Mary Porteous left Dumfries for Kent as a humble servant in around 1854.  She was at Auchenhay Farm in 1851 and definitely in Kent in 1854.  I thought I had a lead with the surname Glover - the name of the witnesses on her marriage certificate and coincidentally the name of neighbours of the Porteous family in 1841 in Tinwald.  I'm trying to track down the name of the owners of Auchenhay Farm near Corsock in 1851 as maybe that will help ......

Thanks to you both for this information.  It's so exciting when someone unconnected to the family is kind enough to bother to pass on information!  Much appreciated.  I'm drawing a line on my OS map of the area following the farms where Mary's father went in search of work via the places where his ten children were born.  He starts out at Lockerbie and goes via farms just north of Dumfries and then west to Auchenhay then to Urr area.  The Auchenhay census info was interesting - I now need to look at 'the previous/next page'!  Thanks again.

Hi Ian,
Thanks for this.  However, my Porteous family don't seem to have extended from Dumfriesshire to Edinburgh.  I have gleaned a little more since my first log, and it seems they were very firmly in the area only a few miles from Dumfries in any direction at any time.  The last known place was Auchenhay, near Corsock.

Dumfriesshire / Porteous - Kirkmichael / Kirkpatrick

Is there a big house or farm near Kirkpatrick Durham?  Mary Porteous (born 1834 Kirkmichael) was a servant in Kirkpatrick Durham in 1851.  By 1854 she had moved to Kent - but why?  She married a shepherd and never went back.  Possibly she was a servant in a household which spent some part of the year in Kent.  Any ideas on how I might find where she was a servant?
