Although dating from around 1908, i have photos of my great uncle Bill, as a young child, dressed in girls clothing.

Initially i thought that odd but then realised just how poor the family were at the time and that Bill was simply wearing his older sisters 'hand me downs'.

Hi Shelly
Thank you for your reply and for the link to the Bures-Online website. Unfortunately, i am already aware of that feature.........because I wrote it !!   ;D

When i wrote that feature two years ago 'Picture Post' did seem the most likely source for the article. But then the 1935 photos turned up which put Picture Post out of the running, as it didn't begin publishing until 1938.  :(

England / The most likely 1935 magazine?
« on: Sunday 30 January 11 17:29 GMT (UK)  »
My gt gt grandfather, George Frederick Baker (1859 - 1944) was a bit of a character. Known as 'Quark' he lived the last 15 years of his life in a Crofters caravan in a field above the village of Bures Hamlet in Essex.

His occupation was that of a rat-catcher although he undertook any farm labouring jobs on offer. He was abit of a local eccentric, especially known for riding his three wheeled bike.

According to family legend (and this has been varified by three seperate sources), Quark was featured in a national magazine article. Photographs taken of Quark riding his trike were used in the magazine. A few have been uncovered and were found to be dated 1935 on the reverse.

Unfortunately the name of the magazine wasn't noted on the photographs and no one can remember the magazines name either.

Given the above info on my gt gt grandfather and the year of 1935, can anyone suggest what would have been the most likely magazine that the article would have appeared in?

I'm really hoping to find this article / magazine so any help would be gratefully received.

Thank you,
Rob

china, many thanks for the postcard dating. So my photo dates from between 1924 - 1931, with perhaps late 1920's being the best guess?

prue, thanks for sharing your photo of your nana. Her pose, clothing and even the background radiates a kind of 'military' feel to the photo.

Incidentally,i notice you are researching the Francis family in Essex. I have Francis ancestors born in Colchester,Essex, during the 1820's if that ties in with your family.

Prue, thank you for your reply. That widens the timespan to anytime during the 1920's (and beyond) which is interesting. Thanks again.

China,i've been in touch with the photo's owner and have now been informed that it is indeed a postcard photo. They have now sent me a scan which should be below which hopefully will narrow the dating again.

Thanks again to everyone for their info and feedback.
