Northumberland / Dockwray square

What is the origin of the name of Dockwray Square in North Shields? Is it named after someone with surname of Dockwray?

Thanks so much, Alan Boyd, for your skilful detective work in locating Prodlaw! I live a couple of miles away and had never heard of it. So many old names have completely disappeared and been replaced by new ones.  What would we researchers do without Rootschat?

Thank you everyone for your suggestions. I have verified that the placename of Proudlaw or Prodlaw is recorded as “in the parish of Bamburgh” in the original entry in  1770s Baptism register. Perhaps it is an old name for a tiny place/building which no longer exists.

Northumberland / Where is PROUDLAW?

I have received a query from someone researching ancestors from North Northumberland who mentions that one of them may have lived at PROUDLAW. Probably near Bamburgh, Warenford or Newham. I live near the latter but have not heard of it and it does not appear on old maps.

Can anyone help suggest where this might be? I think it could be an mis- transcription  but for what?

If you look on Find A Grave you will see the family details listed for the death of this child,s mother in 1928, burial in Netherton Lane Cemetery. You will note that 3 of the children apparently died in infancy, although there is no mention of the child you mention. It is not uncommon to find that one or more children are not baptised when others in the family have been. Sometimes there are practical reasons such as moving house or domestic crises which cause baptisms to be delayed and subsequently forgotten about.

I doubt if Widdrington  would come under North Northumberland for inquests. It is near Morpeth but could come under the same category as Alnwick. Have you contacted Woodhorn or Berwick Archives? And have you looked in The Alnwick Mercury newspaper?

Best of luck in your search.

Try looking in local newspapers around that time. They often provide verbatim evidence from witnesses and can sometimes be more useful than the actual inquest report.

These 2 websites were quoted in earlier Rootschat posts about Wooler gravestones. They may be some help to you. I think the extension site is your best bet. Most of the gravestones at St Mary’s are much older.
Good luck!

Thank you Bearkat. Good suggestion. Sometimes I wish I had wealthy ancestors!
