The Common Room / Heraldry links to family history
« on: Tuesday 16 November 21 19:57 GMT (UK)  »
I am currently doing some research about the village in which I live, In the 1950s, the vicar decided to do some restoration on a chapel in our church concentrating in particular on its heraldry. Some of the heraldric devices are divided into over 30 individual shields. None of the original paintwork on these devices was still in existence so it appears the vicar was more interested in filling in the paintwork rather than getting their colours correct.

Surely there are people who have a certain obsession on heraldry in much the same way as we focus on genealogy so I am asking if anyone can direct me towards something where I might be able to ask a few questions to give me something to get me started on the topic. I am not worried about the size of the challenge as I have a (hopefully) long retirement ahead of me.

Many thanks
Nick

The Common Room / Suggestions needed
« on: Sunday 03 January 16 17:03 GMT (UK)  »
Happy New Year one and all. Can anyone suggest how I can help my mum, who  is 93, discover what happened to her cousin who has not sent her a Christmas card for the second year running? Mum fears she may well have died and her family not have known about mum to let her know what happened. The cousin would also be well into her 90s - married name is fairly uncommon. Cousin lives in Dalbeattie and I have her name and address (William Street). Further information available should anyone have any bright ideas on how to settle this query.

Thanks in anticipation and apologies if this is an inappropriate use of this board.

If you go to the Diocese of Chelmsford website, you will see that the Director of Education is a Tim Elbourne and he comes from the Cambridge area. There may well be a way of making contact with him through that website and knowing him, if he finds a connection with Fiji, he will be very interested.

A friend of mine put all my research into some perspective when she informed me that her ancestors were influential at the Chinese court (she is from Brunei but of Chinese origin) and her tree can be traced back to 200BC, although the first 400 years or so are not written down. She has a transcript, but it is in classical Chinese, something  that is about as understandable in that culture as Anglo-Saxon is in our own.

The Common Room / Re: How big was a medieval acre?

Dimensions of an acre are a chain by a furlong (or 22 x 220 yards) accounting for the rather odd 4840 square yards to the acre.

Norfolk / Re: How far did Norfolk labourers travel to find work?

My gg g/f moved from the Broads area (Langley) to Leeds in the late 1830s and shortly afterwards moved to Hull. Two of his brothers joined him there. Another branch of the family moved from Lowestoft Yarmouth area to Tyneside. Later, we find one of the men who stayed behind and worked as a fisherman, selling fish in Hull, where it must surely have been bought (in part at least) by my relative who was the first proprietor of a fish and chip shop that has carried his name for 4 generations.

The Common Room / Re: How far back can we research?

I searched the Norfolk Records Office index using three words: a forename, a surname and the name of the village(s) my family had lived in. I have half a dozen villages of interest and I tried a variety of forenames, both male and female. I suspect I have found the will of the grandmother of the earliest known member of my family in which she makes bequests to five children, one of which must be my ancestor. I haven't been able to join the dots yet and prove which child is in my line, nor have I found out the name of her husband, but I hope anyone kind enough to read this note will see the potential value of some speculative searching using probabilities rather than facts. I got some information by searching for records about the family that owned the land my ancestors rented to farm.

Durham / Re: Robert CARVER born Sunderland 1829?

For what it's worth, my Carver line originates in Norfolk in the area around the Broads and there are examples of Lowestoft born Carvers moving up to the North East. If you would like me to check my PAF file to see if there are any common entries, please send me the details. Your Robert is not in the file, but it is far from exhaustive.

I had some queries about graves a few years ago. The people I made contact with in Gateshead were extremely helpful - going above and beyond the call of duty with their reply. The people in Hull were less helpful.
