Cornwall / names: COURAGE & PETERS.
« on: Saturday 31 July 04 23:38 BST (UK)  »
My father was descended from a Pierre Courage, a french prisoner of war who did the right thing by the local girl & has many descendents in Cornwall (& elsewhere) The family lived/lives in the Constantine/Falmouth/Mabe/Penryn/Truro areas. There are headstones & parish records especially in Constnstine. My grandfather John Courage married Lillian Peters (born Budock 1891), Peters being another important Cornish surname, with extensive connections. So : anyone out there with the same connections, or maybe collateral links ? Would be nice to hear from you.

Shropshire / Names: Onions (sp?) Bromly/Bromley/Beynon
« on: Saturday 31 July 04 23:28 BST (UK)  »
My maternal great-grandmother was born in Shropshire in1853. Her first name was Amelia, possibly Amelia Matilda. She was probably Roman Catholic. She married a Kauffman Spier, perhaps in Liverpool, were she lived after she was married.
I'm trying to establish her maiden name. I think it may have been Onions (spelling?) or Bromley/Bromly. My grandmother used to talk about a cousin, Mary Beynon, who may or may not have been related to this great-grandmother. so maybe  she was a Beynon too. I simply don't know. So if any of these names connect to you, in the Shropshire area, & for the date given, I'd love to hear from you

The Common Room / researching the female line
« on: Saturday 31 July 04 23:11 BST (UK)  »
I'd really like to trace back down the female line, ie mother's mother's mother etc - but of course the difficulty is that women have traditionally lost their names on marriage (except, I believe in early Welsh society). Added to which, genealogy as a discipline is historically rooted in a system that emphasised the male line. Ayhow, if anyone else out there is interested in the same thing, or has any useful tips, I'd love to be in touch.
