Australia / Charlotte COPEMAN grave at Charters Towers, Queensland
« on: Thursday 19 August 21 23:01 BST (UK)  »
Hi,
I, and other family members, would be extremely grateful if some kind Rootschatter living in or near Charters Towers in Queensland would take a photo for me of the plaque on the grave of my relative, Charlotte Louisa (or Lottie) COPEMAN, who was buried there in 1898. I have a photo of the grave taken some time ago, but it is not possible to read the inscription on the plaque.
I have attached the photo of the grave in order to help locate it in the cemetery.
All the Best from British Columbia, Canada,

Berkshire Lookup Requests / Re: Bray marriage
« on: Monday 04 September 17 01:48 BST (UK)  »
Hi Karen,
Thanks for that information. It does look likely that the parents of Thomas were George and Martha rather than Abraham and Martha. It is not unknown for baptism records to have incorrect parents' names. I have not found a baptism or a marriage for Abraham or any other mention of him.
One way we might be able to prove the link to my ABERCROMBIE family is with DNA. I have had an autosomal DNA test with FanilyTreeDNA. If you did too and we shared some DNA, it would prove that we are related and give a rough idea of the relationship. It is not guaranteed though. If either of us has lost the ABERCROMBIE DNA through the generations, no match will show up.
I hope this helps,
John

Hi Karen,
It is good to hear from another ABERCROMBIE researcher linked to the Bray family. Apart from the baptism of son Thomas at Hurley in 1796, I have no evidence of the existence of Abraham Abercrombie. You raise an interesting point about Abraham possibly being a mistake for George who was also married to a Martha and having children baptised at Hurley at around that time. There is even a gap in George's children, between William (1793) and Martha (1798), into which Thomas would easily fit.
I would be very interested to hear more about Thomas and his descendants. I have nothing on him after his baptism.
I hope to hear from you soon,
John in British Columbia, Canada

Armed Forces / Re: Northamptonshire Regiment deserter Fred HODGES
« on: Saturday 01 December 12 19:58 GMT (UK)  »
Thanks Sandy for all your efforts.
Fred was baptised at Wellingborough All Saints on 3 December 1883, the same day as his younger sister, Ethel.
According to Ancestry, the Fred HOWES who was in the Warwickshire Regiment joined up and was born in Coventry. If this is really Fred HODGES, he was lying about his birthplace too. So I looked for a Fred HOWES born in or near Coventry. All I could find was an Alfred HOWES born in Foleshill. I am now trying to find out if this is the same chap that joined the Warwickshire Regiment. If it is, then he is obviously not Fred HODGES. If it is not, the possibility remains open.

Hi Sandy,
I have searched the Northampton Mercury online at Findmypast and cannot find a Fred Hodges mentioned as a deserter.
Northampton/Abington Museum replied the other day but were not very helpful. They simply referred me to the National Archives.
However, I had a reply from Wellingborough Museum today and Melody was very helpful. She said that you had mentioned this case to her and so thank you! I had not considered what new name Fred might have used, but Melody suggested that he would probably have kept his first name and used a surname beginning with H so that he had the same initials. She did a quick search and the first on the list was a Fred HOWES who was in the Warwickshire Regiment and killed in WW1. It is interesting that she came up with the name HOWES as that was his mother's maiden name. I suppose it is an obvious choice. I will have to investigate Fred HOWES a bit more.

Hi Ken,
Thanks for your message. That gives me a line of inquiry that I was previously unaware of. I thought desertions must have been publicised somewhere but I had no idea where.
Cheers,
John

Hi Sandy and Stebie9173,
Thank you both for replying to my post. Unfortunately I know very little about Fred. As far as I know, he did not marry and I don't know when he died or what name he used to join up again. I don't even know what name he used in the latter part of his life.
I have not been able to find him in the 1901 census and I assume he was serving either in India or South Africa.
I have written to the Abington Museum (I thought that was the Regimental Museum) but I have not had a reply yet. I will try Wellingborough Museum too as he came from the town.
One thing which may narrow the dates down a bit: I have a report from the Northampton Mercury in January 1897 of a Frederick HODGES of Wellingborough being charged with breaking into a shoe factory. I assume this is the same chap and therefore he did not join up until 1897 at the earliest.
As you may have gathered, he was a bit of a naughty boy and became the black sheep of the family.
Cheers,
John
