My gran [ a scullery maid, then a kitchen maid age 14-20 when she married] told me many years ago that she had to turn and face the wall, when any of the family she worked for happened to be passing. If she was alive today I think she would have something to say about 'Downton Abbey'.

I have a ’tight’ tree with direct bloodlines only
Tree number 2 is including my wife’s tree
Tree number 3 is the tree my son-in-law brought to the marriage.
Tree number 4 is ALL the marriage links [siblings, cousins, links to links etc.]
The first 2 add up to 435
Tree number 3 adds it up to 658
And the final one adds it up to over 3000.
I have seen some amazing claims on various trees with figures in 5 digits., and people with a ‘direct line’ to Adam and Eve!. [7 billion + cousins? LOL]

About the same time I started taking my FH seriously having only 'dabbled'. Many links and contacts later, I am still here and still linking and never give up searching for that 'elusive' one.

Happy birthday Rootschat.

The Lighter Side / Re: error on own tree

I blame the parents or in this case grandparents. On my paternal grandparent's 1908 marriage certificate, my grandmother's father is named as 'William', and not a 'common' surname'.From this I discovered a William living in the same street in the 19O1 census, two doors away.A daughter with the same first name as my grandmother. 'ah this must be the one'. So I 'followed' them logically back through census and Free BMD. I then accessed the 1911 census for my grandparents when it came on line. Where the birthplace of my grandmother was  in the 'wrong place'.

So further digging revealed my great grandfather was Thomas with the middle name of William.

The William living in the same street turned out to be a third cousin of my great grandfather.

Much deleting and correcting of family tree. I always double check any new info now of course!

A friend once put on an application form that required his previous employment 'Educational Establishment Maintenance and Security Facilitator' [Caretaker / Janitor] and was progressed to the next level, where he was accused of being untruthful about his work experience. :)

Recently, I saw a connection flagged. A particular lady had latter information correct, but parents and therefore grandparents etc wrong,
The particular parents were my great uncle and his wife. The lady had got their children and descendants right, but  the parents birth, marriage and death wrong. . I searched for where she had got the mistaken info from and found it,
So I double checked my info [just in case] then dug out my great uncle's birth. marriage and death certs. As well as census returns for all involved.
The lady contact was adamant that she was right. Her 'ancestors' must have married at 14 and produced 5 children before they were 22, IF she was right. Ah well I tried.☺

I know things must change and the world moves on, but to be honest, I much preferred the 'old style' online IGI and British 1881 census and US and Canadian 1880 census. SO easy to search.
