Lancashire / Re: Today is LANCASHIRE Day

Shaun,

the internet has made it a very small world. Sitting here in Brighton, I posted a request for information on MIs in Macclesfield, that you were kind enough to answer, then I had a look at this thread to see one of my favourite pubs mentioned.

I was born in Liverpool and grew up in Crosby, and the Volley along with the Old Bank and the Victoria were regular watering holes.

Happy (Lancashire) days!

As genealogists we can't do justice to a day like this without celebrating our birthplaces - I was born in Waterloo http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Waterloo%2C_Sefton
and spent my childhood in Crosby http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Great_Crosby

Cheshire Lookup Requests / Re: Macclesfield MIs - GIBBON
« on: Tuesday 27 November 07 18:06 GMT (UK)  »
Hello Jean,

Thanks for the message, the Gibbons are the 'tricky' ones in my tree. The only certainty I have is that my great grandfather was called Arthur Gibbon. I'm not even sure where he was born as one census says Macclesfield and another says Stoke - there's no entry in the national birth indexes, and seemingly none in Cheshire.

I only have him for certain on 1891 and 1901 censuses, although there is a record in 1861 (when Arthur would have been 5) of an Arthur Gibbon  born in Stoke and living in Macclesfield. I thought it was possible that someone would have completed the later census on one occasion and 'knew' he was from Macc, but then he did it another time and put Stoke down. If it is the right family then they were living in the One House in Rainow in 1851, and had been reasonably well to do as farmers and silk manufacturers/throwsters - with lots of entries on the tithe records.

The only family name that I have so far connected with that family is Hill, as James Gibbon - who could have been Arthur's father or uncle - nothing is really certain - married a Sarah Hill in Great Longstone, Derbyshire.

Other than that, Arthur moved to Liverpool, marrying first Elizabeth Parry (they married when their son was 17!) and after Elizabeth died he married Catherine   Dean.

So, after that ramble, I'm not certain of any other Gibbon related names. Hill is a possibility and the family he married into gives me Dean and Yates. My Grandad, Arthur's son Matthew, married a Hughes, and my Mum married a James.

The names on the list on this thread are ones that could be possibles - Sarah the possible wife of James; Matthew and Elizabeth, possibly James' parents (he said his father was Matthew on his marriage cert and the IGI has a James with these names as parents in Macclesfield at about the right time); Enoch possibly James's brother (same IGI).

Lots of different threads, no certainty at all - still the enjoyment of searching balances out some of the frustrations of not finding!

Are your Gibbons from Macclesfield, or elsewhere. I would be interested in any information, you never know when a connection may come about!

Best wishes,

Andy

Hi Shaun,

thanks for checking for me. It seems that anything with 'Gibbon' attached to it in  my family tree is always going to take a little bit of coaxing out!

Best wishes

Cheshire Lookup Requests / Macclesfield MIs - GIBBON
« on: Tuesday 27 November 07 11:51 GMT (UK)  »
Dear all,

I wonder if SKS would be able to look up some Gibbons for me. I have a whole collection of them round and about Macclesfield that I am trying to piece together and am hoping that the MIs might give a clue.

If anyone is able, it would be great to have any detail of:

Matthew GIBBON - died 1840, aged 63, death registered at West Macc

Matthew Albert GIBBON - died 1840, aged 0, death registered at East Macc

Elizabeth GIBBON - died 1842, aged 62, death registered at West Macc

Enoch GIBBON - died 1861, aged 45, death registered at West Macc

Sarah GIBBON - died 1865, aged 63, death registered at East Macc

Sorry it's such a big list, but any help would be gratefully received. Thanks in advance,

Andy

Cheshire / Re: Cheshire Parish Records Marriages only pre 1837
« on: Tuesday 27 November 07 10:28 GMT (UK)  »
Dear all,

I'm not sure what information is available about marriages in the records that people have, so apologies in advance if I'm asking for something that's not possible!

I have a marriage between Samuel Edwards and Catherine Lewis (my 4xgreat grandparents) at Tarvin on 2 April 1818. There is a user submitted entry for this marriage on the IGI, and I've had a family bible transcript sent, so I'm pretty sure it's the right one for me.

I have two questions really. The first is, is it possible from the records that people have to see the names of Samuel and Catherine's parents' or at least father's names?

Secondly, if it is, would it also be possible to see Ann Edwards - married Thomas Peacock at Tarvin either Jan or Jun 1807  and Elizabeth Edwards who married John Cawley at Tarvin on 5  January 1790.

This would all help in tying people into - or not - a set of Edwards' wills I have.

Sorry this is so long, and thanks in advance for any help anyone can give.

Best wishes

Andy

Dorset / Re: Corfe Castle Coastguard - Edward James
« on: Tuesday 01 August 06 21:14 BST (UK)  »
Dear All,

thanks for the information and advice. There are plenty of things for me to look up and check!

I suspect that I'll spend a lot more time on google earth than is necessary!

And the books look really interesting, particularly as, for a short time at least, James Mitchell was a coastguard at the same time as Edward.

Thanks again for all your help,

best wishes

Dorset / Corfe Castle Coastguard - Edward JAMES
« on: Sunday 30 July 06 19:31 BST (UK)  »
I wonder whether anyone can point me in the right direction - and apologies if this isn't the right board.

Edward James was my ggg grandfather and was a career sailor, and between 03 Oct 1857 and 31 Mar 1874 was based at the Coastguard Station at  Corfe Castle. I've got Edward's service record from the National Archives, but it doesn't tell anything about life at Corfe for the Coastguards.

I wondered whether anyone might know where I could find records/information about the Coastguard station at Corfe Castle, and possibly the people who served there?

Thanks for any help and advice that anyone can give.

Best wishes,

Andy

Dear All,

I wonder whether someone would be kind enough to look up the Blundell family - most likely at 21 Eccles Street, Liverpool?

I'm expecting to find Thomas Blundell, his wife Jane and at least their daughter Jane who was born at 21 Eccles Street in 1846.

Jane continued to live at the address (or at 19 or the court that seems to have been between the two addresses) and her own children - with the surname Woods - were born in the same address. I've got entries for 1871, 1881 and 1891 for the Woods family at this address and would love to see whether the Blundells are there from 1861 backwards.

I'd really appreciate anyone being able to provide me with the details of the entries for 1841, 1851 and 1861 for the family at this address.

Thank you in advance for the time and effort in any help that you are able to give me.

Regards

Andy

The Common Room / Template forms for checking BMD
« on: Friday 03 September 04 17:08 BST (UK)  »
I have to confess to being terribly disorganised. Every time I go to the records office I end up Like Columbo, pulling pieces of paper from my pockets and writing down the information I find just about anywhere I can.

Can anyone point me in the direction of where I might find/buy usable template forms for recording searches of births, marriages and death records?

I'm determined to get my records into some type of sensible order, and would be really grateful if anyone could point me in the direction of a decent way of recording this information.

Thanks in advance for any help or advice you can give me.

Andy
