Europe / Re: Maltese Newspapers 1860's with shipping news - Any available online?
« on: Tuesday 09 April 24 04:12 BST (UK)  »
Hello again, still_looking. Yes, I've done Lloyd's List backwards and forwards many times because I have over 100 sailing vessels of interest and I've done histories for most of them, and still working on some.

But this particular one is special - a barque from Shiefds, her last recorded notation was of leaving Enos for Malta and I had (faintly) hoped that by going through the Maltese papers I might find some other tidbits that were possibly her, such as wreckage from an unidentified vessel coming ashore, a cluster of bodies washed  up on shore, that sort of thing.

Thank you again for your help.

Cheers,
Westoe

Thank you, still_looking, I will try your suggestion. My apologies for taking so long to reply; I have been without computer access. My hope is to get some more information about a ship that foundered somewhere between Enos and Malta.

Cheers,
Westoe

Europe / Maltese Newspapers 1860's with shipping news - Any available online?
« on: Friday 22 March 24 23:05 GMT (UK)  »
Dear all,

I've been going round and round in circles with Google, so am asking you. I'd like to find 1860's Maltese online newspapers with shipping news, in English preferably, but in Italian or Maltese will also do. Much obliged if anyone here can point me to the right website(s).

Cheers,
Westoe

Hello again Nickna,

Looks like John James served in merchant navy in WWI

https://livesofthefirstworldwar.iwm.org.uk/lifestory/7103568

though I'm not sure of what the citation number 7875164 refers to.

Info on ASSHUR here:
https://www.clydeships.co.uk/view.php?a1PageSize=75&ship_listPage=6&a1Order=Sorter_name&a1Dir=ASC&a1Page=33&ref=53650&vessel=ASSHUR

EDIT:

Nickna, have you checked the newspapers for your lad? Even without a subscription, you can read the thumbnails. The usual format in the shipping news columns is:
          (VESSEL NAME) comma (MASTER'S SURNAME)

I used the British Newspaper Archive:
https://britishnewspaperarchive.co.uk/search/results?basicsearch=bobbitt&exactsearch=false&country=england&retrievecountrycounts=false&region=north%20east%2C%20england&mostspecificlocation=north%20east%2C%20england&sortorder=dayearly&page=1

I see Bobbit on ANN in snippets from 16 June 1859 to 14 August 1862. She appears to have been a coastal collier as her departures are usually Shields or Newcastle and her destinations are usually English coastal ports.

That suggests that James Bobbitt may have sat his certificate exam late 1862 or later.

Cheers,
Westoe

ELIZABETH CURRY, schooner, built in Sweden, previous name CLARA.

Maritime History Archive in Newfoundland holds several crew lists, but warn you, they are pricey.

Hello Nickna,

Welcome to RootsChat. Am I right in thinking that you got the ELIZABETH CURRY information from the 1881 census?

Did you check the other censi? In 1861, he appears on the ANN with two crew. I can't seem to find him in the Masters and Mates Certificates database, but, since after 1850 certificates were mandatory for foreign voyages, suggests he might have been a coastal trader.

Occupation Interests / Re: Merchant Sailors 1811-1830 - London-Quebec

Hello AmandaP,

There are a lot of old digitized newspapers available free online at the Quebec Archives.

https://www.familysearch.org/en/wiki/Quebec_Newspapers#Digital_Issues_Online

You do not necessarily have to be able to read French to hunt for him - some of them are bilingual and just a few words will do. The usual format for the shipping news is:
(Vessel Name COMMA Master Surname) - be sure to put the comma between the two names.

I would have tried searching for him on STERLING but you have not given his name.

Cheers,
Westoe

Hello Tyne Thames,

Welcome to RootsChat. I'm delighted to "meet" you here.

After you have made three posts to the forum, the PM (personal messages) option becomes available to you. I'll post a link to a related thread today. If you then post an acknowledgement of that, you'll have made two posts towards your three and have only to make another one.

John Dickinson, butcher, of Jarrow, was a long-time friend and occasional co-investor in ships with Enoch Donkerley Thompson, grandfather of Anne Mary (Lee) Dickinson through her mother Ann (Thompson) Lee, who was EDT's eldest daughter.

There is a very long (29 pages) thread here on Rootschat about the Thompsons, Lees and related families.

https://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=194825.280

If you persevere in reading through it all, I think you will find some snippetts of interest.

Meanwhile I am going through my binders on the Dickinsons to decide just what to ask you.

Cheers,
Westoe
