Sorry Bob,
I can't help you at this stage, but just wanted to reply anyway.
This is a blast from the past as it is 11 years since I first posted my query, and the brick walls are still there, mainly because I haven't researched for a number of years now.
I wish you all the best in your search, and I need to get back to mine when I can.
Regards,
Julie

Sorry for not replying sooner, didn't receive any notification of your posts.
Gortonboy, We can't make out if there is writing on the scroll as it is quite deteriorated, but it is possible. If I can, I will try with a magnifying glass.
Morag, The centre piece is attached, staple fashion, by two pieces of wire through holes in the back piece.

Thank you both for your input.

Thank you for your replies.
Evie, it was found on a building site when the ground was being cleared, so no hope of tracing its origins from there.
S_L, We thought it may have had something to do with the masons, because of the eye, but still not sure.
Thanks again, and if anyone else can assist further, we would appreciate it.

FH Documents and Artefacts / Badge identification

Hope this is the right place to post this one.
Can anyone help with identifying this badge please?  Not sure of how it would have been used as the middle piece is held to the backing plate with two bits of wire pushed through similar to a staple effect. overall size is approximately 2" by 2". Also not sure if it is made from copper as it is quite dirty, with minute shiny parts reminiscent of copper.
Thanks in advance for any assistance,
Julie

Lancashire Lookup Requests / Re: Howarth

Hi Doug,
Welcome to Rootschat. Was your Thomas born c1803 Lancashire, died 1865 Bathurst Australia? Was he married to 1st Elizabeth Redfern and 2nd Martha Pearson Post?  If so, his parents were James Howarth and Betty Collinge.
If you look on Ancestry.com.au you will find quite a few people researching this Thomas who also was known as Lanky Tom.
Regards,
Jelly Beans

loobee589, have you looked on Ancestry? There are a number of public trees there with William and Rachel, however William's father is named as Magnus & mother Margaret.

Hi Lee,
Hope you enjoy it as much as we did. As we live in NSW, we based ourselves in Chiltern, and did day trips to Beechworth, Eldorado, Wangaratta, etc. A most enjoyable week away from work.
Julie :)

Hi again Lee,
The Chiltern Athaenum sent us a book they compiled on Cock Research, which includes a lot of info from newspapers, birth certs, marriage certs, photos, etc. This cost $50.00. They also sent a cd with photos of some of the Cock family, their home and furniture.
While we were in Chiltern, we were lucky enough to meet the people renting the house in Barkley St, where Matthew was born, and they showed us through, letting us take photos.
My partner's father was also born in the house, so it was quite an emotional trip for him. The motel in Chiltern where we stayed, backs on to the house, Madron, named after Matthew's father's(John) birthtown.
Another great place to visit was the town of Eldorado, where John Cock was the mining manager.
Regards, Julie
