Dorset Lookup Requests / Re: Look Up 1861 Census Please - CONWAY
« on: Wednesday 24 January 07 19:21 GMT (UK)  »
My hero (or should I say heroine!)

Martha Martin! I will order the certificate for my collection but I am sure that you are right. I can now start checking in Twilling Gate to find out where Martha came from. She must have had a hard life there as well. It was not a very hospitable place at that period with very harsh winters and not a lot there!

I cannot thank you enough. If I find out anything stunning about Martha I will post it and let you know. I will also continue with George and his family. I am awaiting with interest to see what he died of.
Thanks again

Hi alli

That is him. I know that he died when his youngest son was born or just before, so that answers that question. I will send off for his death certificate as I would like to know what he died of poor soul.

Martha was from Twillingate in Newfoundland and life must have been hard for her with her husband dead and two children. I have her in the census and she became a teacher at a village school. I will trace her line as Twilling Gate records are online but first I have to find her marriage and find out what her maiden name was.

She never went back to Newfoundland but died here in England after what must have been a difficult life.

Thank you again.

Hi alli

Thank you so much for the information, it is marvelous. Now I only need to find Martha's maiden name and I can start to trace her in Twilling Gate, Newfoundland.

This really gets me going on the Conway line.
Thanks again and if I can help with anything for Hampshire please shout.

Any births or marriages would not appear in the BMD as thats when civil registration started in England and Wales. To find an event before this you would have to look in the parish register, in this casse Burghclere for a baptism.

Hi

I saw the marriage of James Pearse and Ann Spackman but in the 1841 census it shows the couple living in Andover with their children James, Louisa and Edwin and Ann's sister? Elizabeth Spackman. It states that James and Ann were both born outside Hampshire.
James's occupation was Sadler. He was born abt 1806 and Ann was born 1811.
I suppose the thing to do is to check the 1861 census to see where they were.

Hi Mark

Perhaps I can help in two ways.
The first is give me the dates of births of 2 of the children after 1837 as the Free BMD and Ancestry do not have all the indexes transcrived as yet. I have access to the full indexes.
Secondly if we get a maiden name for Hannah I can check the Burghclere parish records for you.

Hi Clare

I have just requested the marriage certificate sp do not know her fathers name as yet. Fred was born 1876 so I would imagine she was a similar age but again I will findout when the certificate arrives.
I have Alice's name as widow from Fred's death certificate and also the marriage year from family notes.

Hi Tanja

It is a great help. Even if I just confirm that they had no children at least I would be further forward. It is the correct Joshua as he was born at the Oaks and he did have a brother Samuel and yes his family went to Yorkshire.

Joshua himself remarried in 1872 but again he did not have any children from his previous marriage living with him! Perhaps they did not have any. Mind you it would be unusual not to have produced one in five years but perhaps the child/children died of typhoid like Ann Maria in 1870.

Thank you again

June
