I have a relative born 1796 in Troqueer called William Kerr, the entry on Old Parish Records gives his parents names James Kerr & Catherine Wilson followed by the word "Mounthooly" I can't find this on any map Old or New, can anyone tell me what this refers to, name of a place, name of a Farm, name of a House, what is it please, Troqueer Parish Church entry.

I think so, but you would get a huge number of returns to search through.

Lanarkshire / Re: the name Peem
« on: Saturday 18 February 23 19:38 GMT (UK)  »
There was a boy called Peem in the village I was raised (Plains, Lanarkshire) where nicknames were very common. This area like most in the 19th century had large families and the common method of naming followed in Scotland was to name the first son after the Grandfather and thereafter down the Uncle lines, this resulted in several grandsons in a family all called James or John, in my family we had Big John and Wee John Reddington, the Kane family in Plains was so big the only way to recognise one was by his nickname, Duck Kane, Baldy Kane, Moon Kane etc. because they were all called John.

James (Peem) Kerr.

All these names, McGuigan, Reilly and Fitzpatrick descendants are still living in Plains, a small village outside Airdrie. Prior to that these families lived at Airdriehill Square. ( Whiterigg ) in Miners houses built in 1874, J Fitzpatrick No 13, J McGuigan No14, F A Fitzpatrick No15, T McGuigan No 24, all Airdriehill Square Whiterigg.

This information is taken from the book "Lost Villages" co-written by John Reilly born in Darngavil, his father Leslie Reilly married Mary Kane and settled in Darngavil, thereafter known as "Mary Kane's man". Airdriehill had a football team called Airdriehill Shamrocks and a photo depicts them winning the Scottish Juvenile Cup about 1912, pictured are F. McGuigan and F Fitzpatrick.

Probably nothing to do with your search but Sam Marley was in my class at St Davids School Whiterigg, in the 1940s / 50s. not far from Rawyards, Airdrie and all Mining Communities, we both lived in Plains at the time.

Thank you for the info, I was there visiting in the very early 50s, paddled in the Blackwater, visited the Priory and various family members in Benburb, Dungannon, Derrygoonan Derryfuble and just wondered if any family are still around who might read this. Not looking for an old family tree.

James Kerr, Scotland. where those family members emigrated.
