Kildare / Re: Cahill/Kelly family of Calverstown Little

James Cahill was well read but only worked as a coke drawer or brick works attached to the pits, was constantly on the move and all 9 children were said to be born in a different homes though some in the same pit village. You won't find him in many Durham census returns as he used his alternative name of Carrol most of the time even signed it on his marriage certificate in 1860 but the corresponding church marriage register has his correct name Cahill entered. That is how I believe I missed the Butler family in the the church registers they lived in Spennymoor and in the Catholic parish of Tudhoe which I consulted long before I realised the Butler family had been in Durham between census returns, remember pondering over the name Carl but never noted it as if I saw a George Butler and a Marcella Carl at that stage I would never have dreamed it was James's family. It is a long story I doubt if I have touched for at least 10 years now.

I done a lot of research into the Butler family into 20th century got in touch with some of the descendants found a newspaper report about one who died in Germany. Unfortunately those I traced knew nothing about their ancestry and never heard of my Cahill branch. Think most of the descendants are in Co Meath and scattered throughout the world. Have gone rusty, done most of my research before the age of the computer.

How did you find the children of George Butler and Marcella Cahill in Durham I had trouble finding them because in both certificates Cahill was spelt Carl the way it was pronounced.

Yes but James Cahill also spent some time in America. Julia Hart the daughter of Margaret Cahill who married Anthony Hart in Durham before heading for the PA coalfields made a fortune on the stock exchange in the 20's then lost almost all of it in the Wall Street crashed she died 1935 by which time most of her shares she left were worthless. I have her will!

It is years since I did any research with this family but after that I discovered the Butler/Cahill family came to County Durham close to where my great-grandfather lived and had two more children (I have certificates) then Marcella must have died, I don't know where only George Butler resurfaced back in Kildare when he married widow with more children so there must have been a house full!

PS: Ann Duffy's maiden name was Hoey, she died 1903 when her children were infants. I have her obit, it was a large funeral.

I have comprehensively researched this family up to 1912 and have all the certificates. James Joseph Duffy junior's mother Ann Duffy was born Sunderland, her mother was Ann Martin born Leons Beg Magheracloone. I was hoping to find out what happened to the three orphaned children after James Joseph Duffy senior died in a private Dublin hospital. I have details of Bernard Duffy's marriage in Dublin where he lived and his involvement with the Abbey Theatre after attending Trinity Collage. I also managed to pick up an original copy of his book Oriel partly set in Carrickmacross.

For the attention of AGrieve. Thank you for your response. This was an old post of mine from nearly 12 years ago but I'm still interested.

Looking forward to hearing from you.
