The Common Room / Re: What does IDIOT really mean?
« on: Sunday 30 October 11 12:50 GMT (UK)  »
I have found if I cannot read a word on an old document it is sometimes much easier if you invert the document and read it as in negative, ie the writing in white on a black background.

Heraldry Crests and Coats of Arms / Re: Coats of Arms
« on: Sunday 16 October 11 16:45 BST (UK)  »
Coats of Arms were awarded to an individual not to people with the same surname.   these Coats of Arms were able to be passed from the person awarded this to the elder son and so on down the line.  it did not mean that cousins, and everyone of the surname is or was entitled to use those Coats of Arms.  If no elder son to inherit then the Coat of Arms became extinct.

The elder son upon inheritanc would have to apply to the College of Arms to have the matter ratified.

Ireland / Re: Help with Latin Translation?

A Dispensation was sometimes requested from Rome or an Archbishop so that two people of differing faiths could marry in that particular church.

This is where the other party did not want to change their religion and they usually undertook to agree than any children of the marriage would be brought up in the Faith of that particular Church.

Exactly how much does this course cost.   Oxford University used to so an open learning course in genealogy that was just short of £1000.  but it was very restrictive in that the work you were asked to do was in the main about areas in the South of England.

The Lighter Side / Re: Royal DNA

Sounds odd to me  how have they got DNA from the King Henry, I would think it would be difficult to get it, the French etc wouldn't go handing out samples.

The Common Room / Re: Puzzled by a TV Show - When someone dies without a will?
« on: Tuesday 11 October 11 22:40 BST (UK)  »
Word of mouth is not sufficient if two sons  and no will the estate will be divided equally in law, the Probate Court and /or solicitor would be obliged to divide the estate.  Perhaps the second person  and the authorities were deliberately not told about the 2nd person. but any good solicitor would check it out.

How long ago was this?

Meath / Re: Oldcastle - Meath

Yes  I have all of that, but there is no mention of any Mr Ross, who paid for one of their sons education.  This is the problem. I am a Henthorn(e) but coming across problems getting the copies of the documents I have the reference numbers for out of Ireland.

Thank you for the input

It used to be done when the Archbishop attended the area in question this could be 2 years after First Communion or could be even 5/6 years it depended on the visitation dates for that particular Archbishop.
