Okay, will cross her off my list!  perhaps the next one will work - I did need a SMITH in the family!  Although I would prefer something less common.

I have looked on the IGI Batch website for Dittisham, Devon and found 2 maybes!  A Charlotte Terry DUKE c: 5 dec 1830 and Charlotte SMITH c: 11 apr 1830 and maybe a Charlotte PITTS, although I think the date was earlier than I would have liked.

As the census records show a consistent birth/age  for Charlotte (1831) I have the feeling of looking around the 1830-1832 mark and the above dates were the closest, I was also lucky that Charlotte wasn't a very common name!

Thanks for your time and effort

I'm that lady in Canada! - I have been in contact with "the old lady's" son to see what I could find out and he hasn't replied to my email, I understand he has all the family history records.

I also found out the "8" was crossed out and changed to a 3 on one of the original family charts.  However we are correct to assume that Grace was the youngest of the family and the older sister . . . our unknown married to ROBBINS was quite a bit older than Grace.

The search goes on . . .

Once again thankyou, will do.

I have another Mother without a maiden name, daughter born around 1789 in Barnstaple, Devon.  I know Father's name.  Would getting a birth certificate give me the information I need in that case and that early?  I will post on Devonshire section to see if any one out there knows.

Yeah, I thought it looked like a 28 as well!  So now where?  All I have now is Charlotte, born abt 1831, Dittisham, Devon (1861 Census), mind you it's been that way for years!

and I only found William's family not long ago and that was trial and error!

thanks for the tips about transcribing names

I think I have this right . . .

Servant maybe, but not at parent's home.  Relation noted as daughter.

William was born 1829 Rain/Baintree, Essex died between 1866 (last child born 1865, Charlotte a widow in 71, 81, 91, 01 census records) and 1871

Have 3 marriage records for William HARRINGTON
1. 1850 AMJ St Martins in the Fields Vol 1 pg 167

2. 1850 AMJ Whitechapel Vol 2 pg 630

3. 1850 OND Chelsea vol 3 pg 47

I'm only guessing 1850 and haven't been able to check as i never had Charlotte's surname.

Where was William on Census night?

1855 they were living St Georges, Middlesex and 1871 census has Charlotte and her children  in Paddington, London until the death of Charlotte.

Okay - bare with me as I am new at the message board thing and don't even know if I have the correct one to post my information  . . . here goes . . .

1851 england census has an entry for Charlotte HARRINGTON, age 20, daughter of Ina and Eliz CUMERS.

Now HARRINGTON is her married name and I have all census records for 61, 71, 81, 91.

However I couldn't find her on the 1841 Census as a 10 year old. I have not been able to find her birth or the marriage of her parents!

Eliz CUMERS died 2Q 1842 Kensington

Charlotte's birth est 1831, Devon, England

She married William HARRINGTON 1850.  William was no where to be found on the 1851 Census!

I have tried spelling variations of CUMERS - no luck!

Perhaps someone out there will have more success - here's hoping!
