Sorry, I was trying to work back to double check your information but to be honest I found your initial post difficult to read as it was one very long paragraph so did not proceed with it as far as I would have liked.

As you have now confirmed that you have the marriage hopefully we can go back further with this.

This is where I get suspicious  Robert Mason has 9 children. One of these was Robert Mason 1757-1849 who went to America and fought for the rebels earning the nickname 'The Patriot'.  American contacts and trees I have seen have his mother as Elizabeth Dudley, I cannot find a marriage of a Robert Mason to a Dudley. I have a marriage 1749 to Elizabeth Lee.

Where the Americans get Elizabeth Dudley from I don't know. Maybe some clue in Ann Dudley Mason.

Baptised St Mary, Whitechapel - parents Robert & Elizabeth
William Mason 15 Dec 1750 - Mill Yard
Elizabeth Mason 25 Oct 1752 - Mill Yard (not on your list)
Sarah Mason 14 Feb 1755 - Rosemary Lane
Robert Mason 24 Apr 1757 - Rosemary Lane
Elizabeth Mason 22 Jul 1759 - Whites Yard
John Mason 29 Mar 1761 - White's Yard
Ann Dudley Mason 5 Dec 1762 - Whites Yard
Charlotte Mason 3 Jul 1765 - White's Yard
James Mason 4 Sep 1767 - Rosemary Lane
Charles Mason 25 Dec 1770 - Whites Yard.

Could it be that there are two different families here ?
It is definitely worth considering
Maybe, maybe not. Could be the same address....White's Yard and Glasshouse Street, running between Rosemary Lane [later Royal Mint Street] and East Smithfield, had been another glassmaking site. By the mid-19th century, the area was a maze of slums - cramped courts and alleys. It lay in the administrative district of St Mary Whitechapel, rather than that of St George-in-the-East.

If Elizabeth, wife of Robert Mason, had married in 1749 and was still having children in 1770 she must have been born around 1730.

There’s a 1731 baptism for an Elizabeth Lee at St.Mary Whitechapel. Parents William and Elizabeth

There’s also a burial in St.Mary Whitechapel 19th January 1776, for Elizabeth Mason of White’s Yard. Aged 46.

I don’t think anyone had missed the point earlier.  We were just trying to confirm that James Hawes was Elizabeth’s father.  We didn’t know you already had the marriage certificate. 🙄
Thanks Lily. These do seem to be appropriate although there are several Elizabeth Lee baptisms in the general area, The death 1776 I have located on ancestry.com. Only an entry with no image and no mention of White's Yard.

No-one found Elizabeth Dudley ?  Looking at my notes I have a marriage to Robert Mason about 1750.... Record submitted after 1991 by a member of the LDS Church. I never did take much notice of these submitted things. I note that I can no longer find this entry in Family Search.org

The marriage I have is a clandestine marriage before the Marriage Act of 1753 with no indication of where it took place......

Here he married Elizabeth Mason in 1842. I have found some banns for 1839 without parental information. I think they were null because the bride was under age

The banns were not read in 1839.  The three Sundays were 24 April, 1 May and 8 May in 1842.  You really need to be careful of transcribed records because they rarely take enough care to notice when the year changes in the register.  You can look yourself by going back page by page.

Debra  :)
It's been over 10 years since I did my original search. I should have kept my notes because I nearly rejected  Mason as the name of George James wife. I had found a marriage in 1839 when Elizabeth was only 15. Efforts to find this again have failed. Family Search, Ancestry.com have all updated their sites.

Thank you all. But you are missing my point. I gave all the background I could. Everything fits back to James Mason 1767-1842. His marriage to Mary Ann Hawes makes him a 'certainty' My problem is with his father who appears to be Robert Mason 1728-. Did he marry Elizabeth Lee,  or Elizabeth Dudley as per American pages ?  Were there two Robert Masons about the same age ? As I pointed out children were baptised by Robert and Elizabeth from 2 different addresses,  Rosemary Lane and White's Yard. I don't know where the Americans get Elizabeth Dudley from, I can't find a marriage, but there is a child Ann Dudley b. 1762.
The only marriage I can find is 9th Sept. 1749 Robert Mason of St. Mary, Whitechapel. Cordr. (cordwainer) ? Bch and Elizabeth Lee, of same. Spr. That seems good enough for me.

There is a marriage in Shoreditch 13 July 1853 of Ann Catherine Mason - father James Hawes Mason occ Boot Closer.  Witnesses were George James Smith and Sarah Smith (Both signed)

Alongside Sarah Smith's signature is written (The Brides Fathers Sister)
Sarah Mason married John Smith of Whitechapel 1839. Totally different Smith family from mine

I suspect there is something wrong with my tree. I'll start with my great great grandfather George Alfred Smith 1856-1936. A bit of luck here because 1881 census he his his father living with him and he died the same year. George James Smith 1819-1881, cordwainer from East Knoyle Wiltshire found his way to London. Here he married Elizabeth Mason in 1842. I have found some banns for 1839 without parental information. I think they were null because the bride was under age, Family search gave her parents as James Hawes Mason 1799-1860 and Elizabeth Walton. James Hawes being a cordwainer or bootcloser seemed I was on track. His father was James Mason 1767-1839, his mother Mary Ann Hawes. His father Robert Mason 1730-1824. My ancestor James Mason b. 1767 and the Robert 1757 were both baptised  St. Mary Whitechapel, Parents Robert and Elizabeth of Rosemary Lane, Sarah Mason 1755 in Rosemary Lane, Other children, William Mason, b. 1750 of Robert & Elizabeth Mills Yard. Elizabeth Mason 1759, Robert & Elizabeth -----Yard. John Mason b. 1761 of Robert & Elizabeth, White's Yard. Ann Dudley Mason b,1762. Whites Yard'. Charlotte Mason b. 1765, White's Yard. Charles Mason 1770 Whites Yard. Could it be that there are two different families here ? Where the Americans get Elizabeth Dudley from I don't know. Maybe some clue in Ann Dudley Mason.
