Sussex / Re: Frett and Wright in Hastings/Lewes
« on: Tuesday 22 July 14 16:58 BST (UK)  »
Delighted to receive notification of your posting today, Mustangwright - it just shows the value of staying on the site.  Since my original query I'd researched further and come to the conclusion that the William Wright mentioned in an old family memoir was really Samuel Wright.  I'd also found the entry for Maria Wright's marriage to Charles Hart.  This tied up with memoir notes.

The insurance/burial records for Sam. Wright don't appear to tie up (unless he and Ann both entered into second, bigamous marriages) because Ann Wright, nee Wakefield, went on to marry Isaac Cope, following the death, according to an old family bible, of her first husband (noted as Wm) in 1814.  As you are also aware, Ann is described as Ann Wakefield, spinster, in the entry for her marriage to Isaac Cope.  The same family bible does indeed mention Zipporah Wright as being Ann Luella Frett's mother.  It seems a coincidence that there appear to be Wrights on two sides of the family and wonder if some confusion has occurred.

I have details of Ann & Isaac Cope's children - there were 8 in total, though the first died when only half an hour old.
I was intrigued to learn about Francis Cope's misdemeanours - this has certainly been omitted from the family history.  Probably because his brother James was a letter carrier for the Post Office and superintendent of the Sunday School at St John's Holloway Road!  Can you tell me where you found the information?
Sarah Cope, A & I's only surviving daughter is my great-great grandmother.  She married Richard William Rutherford in 1855.
If you have any more relevant information, or ideas, I would be very pleased to hear from you.  If you think I have anything that might help your research please let me know.

Hi Toni
Thanks for your valued input.  Perhaps I was being over optimistic in thinking Zipporah Frett would be an easy name to identify!
Do you - or does anyone - know if Zipporah is a biblical name?  It isn't included in the Concise Dictionary of English Christian names.

Regards Fran

Pretty sure the 2 later references are my girl.  She was with her daughter & husband at Henry St., St Marylebone, for the 1841 census but not the 1851.  The family bible inscription says she died 24 Feb 1853.
Also wondering if she might have had 3 husbands: Frett, Westwood and Wright?  Perhaps I should look for Westwood-Wright marriages in London in the interim, if there's nothing in Sussex.
Thanks again for your help.

Amazed by your swift response Nell - many thanks.  I think these look very likely, as the name doesn't appear to be very common, unless anyone knows differently?  The 1841 & 51 census records give Ann's age as 25 & 37 respectively, which is a bit late given the brief span of the Frett marriage - but I know census ages aren't always accurate.

Although not one of my main lines of research, this might help clear up some things that don't tie up in my family tree.  My gt-gt-grandma's brother, James Cope, married Ann Luella Frett at Paddington in 1840.  The 1841 census includes Zephora Wright in their household, which tallies with a family bible entry, (where it's spelled Zipproah) indicating she was Ann's mother.  The 1851 entry does not show Zephora but gives Anne's place of birth as Hastings.
According to family notes, James Cope's mother had a first marriage to a William Wright, reputedly a clockmaker from Lewes.  I have failed to find this and wonder if past generations of the family have got their branches crossed!
I would be very grateful to hear of any sightings of Frett in Sussex, particularly if associated with Wright, clock/watch makers or shoemakers.

Thanks Nanny Jan for the 2 entries supplied.  The Amos G looks likely - not so sure about the Henry Edward.

Amos Gurney Rutherford married Ann Martin at St Giles, Cripplegate on 13 April 1857.  I have traced them in later census records, to Hoxton, living in Union St in 1871 and Cu stance (?) St in 1881.  They had 6 children: Elizabeth b. c1857 Ann b. 1861 (Flower makers), Ellen b. 1864, Amos b. 1862, William b.1868 and Henry b 1870.  I have not been successful in tracing any of the 6 children and would like to find out what became of them.

Thought to be c. 1780 - 1790.  Her sister, Martha's, baptism recorded at St Giles in the Fields, London in 1789 & gives parents as Joseph & Susan Wakefield.  According to family bible notes Susan's maiden name was Livermore and her family came from Maldon, Essex.  I have failed to find a marriage entry and a fellow Rootschat-ter confirms there is no entry in Boyd's Index.  Any information/ideas re Ann or her parents gratefully received.
