On Ancestry, that file is in the category of Deserters - date of desertion 11th March 1878.

That date is what I found earlier (reply 6) ;)

In 1878 a Thomas Cox is coming up in the UK, Military Deserters, 1812-1927 age just 20.

Birth Year:   Abt 1858
Birth Place:   Leicester
Desertion Date:   11 Mar 1878
Desertion Place:   Leicester
Publication Date:   12 Apr 1878
Regimental Number:   8564
Military Corps:   Leicester

I wonder if that has anything to do with him changing his surname?

Thanks all, have only just seen the other replies.

So am I right in thinking that if Jack McThompson McGregor was adopted after he was born and then went by the name of John Smith Jones, I would find a birth record on GRO/FreeBMD under the McGregor name but not the Jones name?

Yes correct, with his surname as McGregor which presumably was also his mother's surname.

I cant help thinking how difficult it must have been for postmen to find houses with such brief addresses !

My husband used to be a delivery driver  It is indeed a nightmare when houses just have names and no street number.

There is a 1957 probate of an Alexander Machray LAURIE whose address was The Cottage Holders Green Lindsell Essex. And a 1953 probate of an Ellen Pullen Harrison LAURIE of the same address.
