Census Lookup and Resource Requests / Re: Census 1861
« on: Wednesday 09 July 14 15:30 BST (UK)  »
Thanks everyone,

Sorry avm228, I was having one of those moments! There is John Otter born 1838 and then John Charles Otter born 1856.  I muddled the two of them up!!  Why do they always have the same names!!!  I was looking for John Otter (no charles) born 1838 on the 1861 census, and you guys have come up trumps, thank you  :)

Census Lookup and Resource Requests / Census 1861
« on: Wednesday 09 July 14 13:38 BST (UK)  »
Hello

I would be grateful if someone could have a look for a family on the 1861 census.

Male John Otter (full name was Charles John Otter, but seemed to go by John) born ?
Female Mary Otter (nee Edwards) born 1834
Married 1853.

I am looking for them on the 1861 census.  By this point they would have had at least two children Charles 1856, and Mary 1858.

I am registered on a site but can't find it, and think it might have been transcribed incorrectly.  But I can find them on another site (which I am not a subscriber too!), but I obviously can't see the full record. :(

Any help would be appreciated, birth year, occupations, other children etc..

Many Thanks
Zoe

Wow, thank you Martin...

Can I ask where did you find this information? obviously somewhere I didn't look!!!

I wonder if he had more than one child, as it refers to him as "our beloved father"...

I am all excited now, I had written to the church in Jhansi but never got a response and thought I would never find out anymore, until now...... thank you so much. :)

Hi Leolinedancer

As you can probably see this post is a couple of years old!

After my trip to Kew/BL where I was following a number of leads on the Bell side of my family.  I finally unravelled the Bell mystery (my tree was very complicated!), and proved my great great grandfather was Walter Henry Bell, my ggg grandfather was William Walter Bell.  How things become much clearer when you start looking at actual records, not snippets online..

The Charles Henry Bell was a dead end, and couldn't find a link to my Bell's, there maybe well be one....

Thanks for the post anyway, Trippy  :D

Armed Forces / Re: Did he serve in the Boer War?

Thanks for the replies everyone, Old Rowley I will check out the London Gazzette for clues.

Sillydogs!, thank for the link I also had come across this website, and looked at the names/regiments, and couldn't see him.  Glad you confirmed this! I do have my scatterbrain moments!

I might look and see if he is on the 1901 census, as it might help back up the fact he wasn't in the Boer War.  I have a picture and he is wearing lots of medals, although none of them clear enough to recognise, he must have served somewhere :)

Back to researching, thanks again....

Armed Forces / Did he serve in the Boer War?
« on: Sunday 08 July 12 21:47 BST (UK)  »

Hi everyone,

I was wondering if one of you lovely people could help me out?

I am trying to found out some information on a man called James Griffin, born 22nd May 1851, died 8th August 1912.  I believe he was born in the Bath, Somerset area and served in the 2nd Devonshire regiment.  He was promoted to Lt Col on 1st April 1908.

I would like to trace his military background, could anybody tell me if he was too old to have served in the Boer War? or what is the likely conflict he may have served in?

Unfortunately, as I have been poorly recently I have let my subscriptions slip, as I wasn't using them, so any information would be gratefully received, or some pointers to free websites. ;)

Many Thanks in advance

Trippy  :)

Hi George

I also have indian ancestors, and it can be quite exciting when you find, them but very frustrating trying to trace them!

I have visited the library on a few occassions, and for me when I looked at the cost of paying them to research for me, versus my time, they were very expensive.  I think you also need to be specific about details, such as name, year, and area to search in.

Although I have looked at the LDS website this morning and found the following...
George Harding born ?, married Mary Ann Burn, 19th September 1836, Lucknow, Bengal.  The record you were referring too.

Other suspects though...
George Harding born 1805, marrying a Christina Searman on 29th May 1846, although in Madras
George Henry Harding born 1808 marrying Mary Scott, 24th September 1832, Fort William, Bengal

Possible deaths
George Harding 20th August 1838, Landour, Bengal, occuption Riding Mast 3rd Cavly (the record you refered too)
George Henry Harding 27th Nov 1852, Fort William, Bengal occuption draftsman

If your George married Mary Ann Burn, and he was the George that died in 1838.  They appear to have had one child,
William Harding born 15th September 1836, christened 30th March 1839, Lucknow, Bengal.  Maybe why they were married?  William was born 4 days before their marriage?

Hope this helps you ;D

Kind Regards
Trippy  :D

Hello

Oh sorry!! the TNA is the short name for The National Archive.  The UK National Archive is in London, and they have a huge amount of records, which can help the family historian.  Some are available on-line, others you need to visit the Archive to view.  The website is www.nationalarchives.gov.uk.

Another good website for UK records is www.ancestry.co.uk, on here you can access incoming passenger records to the UK.  I never found my ancestor this way, as it was very difficult to read some of the records.

I don't have access to Ancestry at the moment, my subscription has run out, so I can't look for you.  But there are some free records, I can still see.  I presume you know that your ancestor is listed as living in 200 Southampton Street, London, with a wife (Frances) and 4 children (Helena, Henry, Stanley, and Roland) in 1881?  His occuption is saddler and harness maker.

Hope this is some use ;D

Hi Roly,

I am at work at lunch, and had a quick look on the TNA website.  You can search to see if naturalisation papers exist on line.  If they do, then you need to employ a researcher to find the paper, and photocopy/scan it for you.  But there were no matches under Rekert, Reikert.  These were the matches under Reichardt........but none of them seem to be your man??

I will try to post again later, maybe with more information.
