I have a William Irvine (my GG Grandfather) born 1808 in Menmuir, Angus, Married Isobella Aitken b 1816 in Careston, Brechin, Angus. They were married in August 1836 in Menmuir.
They had the following children -

William Irvine b 1839
Martha Irvine b 1832
Matilda Irvine b 1836
Charles I b 1854
Helen Carnegy Irvine b 8 June 1855 (My G Grandmother)
George Irvine b 18 January 1857
Annie Anderson Irvine b 10 September 1859

Helen had 5 children to different fathers, and never married any of them !!
David Wallace Irvine b 4 March 1874
William Irvine b 26 April 1876
Allan Irvine b 27 November 1879
James Irvine b 25 December 1881 (My Grandfather)
Isabella Bruce Aitken Irvine b 22 July 1889

I believe David and Allan emigrated to Australia.

James married Susan Jane Stronner 0n 31 Dec 1908 in Montrose
They had 5 Children
Susanna Taylor Dunn Officer Irvine
David Wallace Irvine (my Father)
John Stronner Irvine
James Alexander Hutcheon Stewart Irvine
Nelly Mary Grant Irvine

John and James both died in the great flu epidemic of 1918, aged 4 and 2.

David married Martha Begg Gove in 1943, and had a little Girl who was born extremely premature and only lived 2 or 3 days.  James (me!) was born in 1947

I don't know if this fits in with any of your Irvines or not.  Most of them seem to be from the Brechin/Montrose area, so a bit further south than your ones

David Stronner was born in Dun according to what is on the 1881 census.  Dun is not far from both Montrose and inverkelior, so they could well be related.  Unfortunately, I don't know who his father was.

He married Susan Robert on 8th July 1837 in Arbuthnott, Kincardineshire.
As far as I've been able to make out from census records, they had the following children -

John was born in Arbuthnott, and was a Shipwright in Montrose. He married Jane Dunn on 31st December 1873 in Montrose.
Their children were Susan Jane, David, Alexina & Robert.

That's really the total of my information for them, but as you say, Stronner is not exactly a common name, so I'm sure ther must be a link there somewhere.

Was just going to reply again having checked the censuses. I think your David is a different branch, there probably is a link as you say but I think that link happens a little too far back for us to check sadly.

Could be a generation back than what I have. It seems like the David born in Dun family potentially didn't register the baptisms/didn't have them baptised which makes things more difficult unfortunately.

I'll let you know if I find anything else though. The Stronners are a relatively new discovery for me so I may uncover more.

I see you have Stronner in your tree.  My Grandmother was Susan Jane Stronner, born 1881 in Montrose.  She was the daughter of John Stronner (1854-1923) and Jane Dunn (1851-1890).
John Stronner was the son of David Stronner (1810-1886) and Susan Robert (1816-1883).

Does this fit in with your Stronners anywhere?

My Wife's G-G Grandparents were John Mutch & Eliza Buchan.
Their Daughter Elspet Chrighton Mutch (1870 - 1952) Married Alexander Leith (1864 - 1921) at Udny in 1891.
Their Daughter Williamina Munro Leith (1908 - 1983) Married John McKenzie (1902 -1957) at Belhelvie in 1930

Any information you could share round this line would be much appreciated, as I've just got the bare bones outlined above

My Wife's middle names are Williamina Leith by the way.

Just to add my wee bit to the Lawside works story. 

If you look at the 1941 map, you will see to the left of Lawside works that there is a Rockwell works. This was owned by the Boase Spinning Company, and I served my apprenticeship as an electrician there from 1964 to 1968.
Lawside works was part of the South Mills group, which also included Boase Spinning Company, and as part of my apprenticeship, I spent some time in Lawside works as well!

The Last time I was in Dundee was a few years ago, and Rockwell works was completely demolished and housing built in it's place. Lawside works seemed to still be in use at that time, but I can't say what's there now.

The other 2 mills which were in the South Mills group were Garden works in Benvie road, which is also now housing, and South Mills itself, which is still standing, but has been converted to flats.

I left Dundee in 1969 to join the Merchant Navy, and I haven't worked in that city since.
