Canada / Re: Help locating when relative migrated to Canada

Hi,

Not very legible but both Matthew and Winifred are on the Adriatic arriving Halifax. NS 9 March 1919. On Ancestry they are transcribed as Green. Ages are hard to read. He says he is a returning Canadian and been previously in Canada 1916. For Winnifred "with husband ret'd Canadian". Both are headed to Winnipeg. The Adriatic was half troop ship (returning Canadian troops) and half passenger.
Both Guests were passengers.

Library and Archives Canada has the manifest, but almost impossible to read. Ancestry was slightly clearer. It is slow to load, and they are on Page 12, line 6 and 7.

Thank you so much.  I was looking at the date he said he had arrived. Didn't think to check around other dates or errors on name.
Yes the ancestry one is clearer.
Thanks again  :-*

Canada / Help locating when relative migrated to Canada

My great grandfather, Matthew Ernest Guest, emigrated to Canada in 1904 on the Sicillian aged19 . He then came back during WW1 where he was a motor boat mechanic at various places around the UK, He met and married Winifred Dunstan who was from Falmouth. They married in Southampton in 1918. Matthew is then listed on the imperial gratuities as returning to Canada on  SS Adriatic on March 1st 1919. I can't find him on this passenger list or Winfred on this list or any other going to Canada.
Would he have been with returning troops at this time so would she have travelled on another ship??
They then returned to England in Nov 1920 on the Empress of France with a child. He returned to Canada on his own in January 1921 whilst Winifred stayed in Falmouth.

Any help trying to find her records would be greatly appreciated.

Oh wow. Thank you for that. It seems to much of a coincidence.

Agreed.
Another report has more detail describing a midnight chase across fields by the 3 policemen.
In court " ... Guest said the fence and stile were accidentally broken and he knew nothing about the damage to the gates". It didn't work - what he needed was his mate Matthew Taylor's brief!.

Fortunately, the Squire they offended against was not on the Bench else hanging, drawing and quartering might have been on the cards.

I've already refereed to Matthew's school registers on FindMyPast. Do you have them?

Yes I did see them on findmypast. No sub to that 1 at the moment but will buy a month to get all of these.
Thanks for the other report.
I wonder if he was the black sheep of the family hence him deciding to emigrate in 1904 on his own  ::)

There's a Matthew E Guest, age 17 on the 1901 Census at Skittam Hall, Out Rawcliffe, Garstang, occpn teamster on farm, born Barrow in Furness. Checking his parents (Thomas, Emma) there is no Matthew E with them on the 1901 Census. So, wondered if this was "your" Matthew on a jolly boys day out?

Lancaster Standard & County Advertiser, 7 Nov 1902
"WILFUL DAMAGE BY YOUTHS - Matthew Taylor, Wm Bradley, Thos Butler and Matthew E Guest, four youths residing at Great Eccleston, were charged with doing malicious damage to a fence at Great Eccleston, the property of Mr Stackhouse on the 18th October. Mr Callis, who defended Taylor proved that he (Taylor) was not there when the fence was damaged. . Taylor was dismissed, the other three being fined 2s 6d and costs. The same four youths were also charged with doing wilful damage to gates &c the property of Squire Aistang, of Rawcliffe Hall. The charge was proved by Pcs Davey, Matthews and Lawds and defendants were each fined 2s 6d and cost

Oh wow. Thank you for that. It seems to much of a coincidence.

Sandra thank you so much. I had his grave stone but not certificate.  :D

I had been searching for him for  a very long time. My gran never knew her father and my great gran was only 17 when she had her. Using DNA, the leeds method and various other bits I narrowed the surname down. It was then a case of pinpointing a GUEST who was in Falmouth at the time of my grans conception. Matthew was a motor mechanic in the RNVR and was based on HMS Creel Castle, Falmouth.  My great gran worked in a hotel at the time.
I have since worked this line forward and have been in contact with another family member which is amazing.
Apparently after they were married, Matthew and Winifred moved to Canada where his family were, but after a while she wanted to return to Falmouth.

She then remarried a while later.

The record is available on Ancestry via a worldwide subscription.
Not sure if UK library access to the site would be just UK records or worldwide, but LDS Family History Centres usually have worldwide access to premium sites on their pcs.

Boo

Thanks I did look but I thought it said ancestry.ca which isn't t covered under
Worldwide.

It is, I looked at it before I told you it was available. If you have a worldwide sub, put his name into this search

Blimey thank you so much. I really appreciate that  ;D

I need a while to read that so my coffee break is sorted later. I might never get to see a photo of him but I now have his handwriting which makes it more personal..
  Again many thanks  :)
