World War One / Royal Engineers
« on: Friday 22 January 10 14:36 GMT (UK)  »
Hi, I wonder if any member can help me or point me in the right direction with the following queries ..

(1) How much of France/Belgium did the railways cover under the the Royal Engineers ... are there any maps?
or was it possible to get from Candas to St Malo or Cherbourg?

(2) Was there any instances of trains being blown up or bombed ... if so where can I find more detail?

Any help much appreciated .. thanks

Steve

World War One / Sappers in WW1
« on: Wednesday 02 December 09 22:33 GMT (UK)  »
I have this picture of my grandfather Sapper Stephen John Uzzell RE 181323 / WR/257175
( he's the one with the moustache)
He was a fireman on the railways in France
The picture is on a blank carte postale ( post card), so obviously taken in France

I know it's a long shot but I wondered whether anybody might recognise either of the other two men in the picture?

On 1851 census Mary Ann Hale down as unmarried ... dau Jane 11? Emma 1 and a lodger John Bakewell

On 1861 Mary Ann now married to Thomas Lyes ... dau in laws Jane 14, Emma 11 and Hannah 8

Found reg on BMD index for Hannah Hale b 1853 Colchester ... found a Jane Bakewell Hale b 1847 Colchester and interestingly an Emma Bakewell b 1850 Ipswich

also a John Bakewell d mar quarter 1855 Colchester ...  Mary Ann married dec quarter 1855

Any thoughts on this would be appreciated

Hi,

Thank you for info, been to library today .. think you may have found right surname .. not sure about the marriage tho .. using info you provided found

Emma dau of Mary Ann Hale on 1851 census b Ipswich
on 1861 census after Mary Ann has married Thomas Lyes Emma appears as Dau in law b Colchester .. likewise on 1871
Emma wife of William Collins appears on 1881..1891..and 1901 census as b in Colchester ...
but on 1911 census gives her b place as Ipswich ...

Seems to have gone full circle ... can understand why she always put down Colchester as she was living there from the age of 1 ... but what do you think made her change so late in life ..

regards Steve

William Collins 34 .. coal carter .. b. Colchester
Emma              31                            Colchester
William               4                            Lambeth
Mary A                3                           Lambeth
Caroline              1                           Lambeth

In 1891 family at same address but now William's occupation given as general labourer and all children given as born in Southwark.

Many thanks,

Wasn't aware you could do that .... know it sounds a bit tight but any money saved at the moment is helpful

Hoping someone might be able to help ...

Have William Henry Collins born 1876 in Southwark looked on the indexes and found 2 of William Henry registered in June quarter of 1876 in St Saviors (Southwark) ..... know the William Henry I'm looking for his father was William Henry too from marriage cert.

Is there any way of finding out which is my William Henry without having to buy both birth certificates ... know that's the obvious route.

Any ideas .... thanks

Lancashire Lookup Requests / Preston baptisms and burials
« on: Wednesday 12 August 09 12:15 BST (UK)  »
Hi can anyone spare some time to look up some baptisms and burials for a southern or can advise where I might be able to find said information on line

Looking for the family of Thomas Pownall and Louisa Perkins, they married in 1886 in St Mark's Church, Preston.
In 1891 they were living at 42 Morgan St, Preston
In 1893 when my grandfather Joseph was born they were at 17 Brunswick St, Preston.
In 1901 they were at 25 Ladyman St, St John, Preston.
In 1911 they were at 7 Smith St, Preston

Known children are
Martha b.1887;
Harry b.1889 d.1893;
Emma b.1890 d. 1892;
John b.1892;
Joseph b. 1893;
William Henry b. 1895;
Thomas b.1897;
Victoria Ivy May b. 1899;
Louisa b. 1900.
Albert Edward b. 1903;
Rose b. 1905;
George Stanley; b. 1910;

The 1911 census shows that they had 15 children
believe the ones not shown above might be

Margaret b. 1890 d.1890;
Hannah b. 1902 d.1902;
Rachel Ann b. 1906 d. 1906;

Just after 1911 Census
My grandfather lost his mother Louisa (Typhoid)
sisters Martha (Typhoid)  and Louisa (TB).
brother George Stanley
and a niece Ivy (Martha's daughter - I think)
all in the April/June quarter 1911

Thomas Pownall (Joseph's father) died 8th Nov 1915 ( my grandfather Joseph was in the trenches at that time)

Joseph and his brothers were working in a cotton factory in 1911, any help with cotton factories in locale of Smith St at the time also helpful.

I Would really appreciate any help as I am trying to write up my grandfathers story,many thanks

Steve
