Apologies in advance but am seeking help on 'Sydney' on the attached record....was it a ship or a depot or what??

Does the 'red' highlight say 'Inverness-shire' as I know the US had a mone-laying base there?

Any  ideas on the significance of the 'yellow' highlights would be great.

Any explanation would be greatly appreciated.

Hi all,
Am seeking help with reading the Naval Service record of my great-uncle....particularly the first three or four lines.
The ships he served on are fairly self explanatory but the start of the record is beyond me....
all help / opinions welcome.

Hi all,

Much to my surprise have discovered my g.grandfather signed up to the RNR in 1899....we assume this was a way of supplementing his meagre wages as a foundry labourer.

What were the rates of pay for members of RNR at this time?

How many days each year would he have spent training with RNR?

Thanks.

Hi all,
While researching a Records of Service I came across the following...which has me baffled and all and any held will be appreciated.
Under the Examinations column
it lists 'If Passed ....School of Instruction' and then 'Cavalry Pioneer Class' and opposite this
Yes   09  Canterbury & Christchurch are handwritten.

What exactly was a Cavlary Pioneer Class and did this mean he travelled to New Zealand for this course??
