Thanks again scrimnet,
As the term Ramolissement seems to be unspecific to one definite cause,I will settle for this lady's cause of death being some kind of brain injury.Best wishes.

Wow scimnet,I wasn't expecting such a detailed reply! Many thanks for your time and trouble,it's much appreciated.
I've spoken to someone who also has this term on a death certificate, but followed by 'congestion of the brain' if that helps any! My lady had this condition for 4 days before death, perhaps it's just a Victorian term for stroke?

Thank you both very much for your quick replies.
As this was an elderly lady I hope the term in her case is a euphemism for senile decay of the brain rather than syphilis!
Thanks again for your help

I've just got a certificate from 1882 with the cause of death given as 'Ramolissement 4 days'.I've searched some medical sites but not found a proper definition, does anyone know what it means please? I'm thinking some kind of brain inflammation akin to what would now be called encephalitis? Thanks.

Hi Gerry,

I was so impressed with such friendly and efficient service that I just thought it would be nice to give credit where its due. While I'm at it I've always found the staff at LRO and the Certificate Service in Preston polite and helpful too, many thanks to them as well.
Tis still the season of goodwill to all men after all! :D

Lancashire / Accrington local studies group - thanks

I would just like to say a big 'Thank you' to the local studies group at Accrington Library.
I emailed an enquiry this morning regarding newspaper archives and got a very quick response asking what I was looking for. I replied with a name and date, and within a couple of hours the relevant page from the Accrington Observer was sent back to me,with the offer of a postal copy should I need it.
That's what I call service!

Lancashire / Re: P.U. Lathom?

Thank you Woody for the confirmation,I did think that must be what PU stood for - 6 would have been the ward number I suppose.

Thanks also Sandgrounder for the extra information, thats very helpful.

The other question I have is that the birth was registered by the grandfather who is listed as an 'occupier of Newburgh within Lathom'
Would the parents (who were both alive, well, married & named on the certificate) not be thought worthy as workhouse inmates to do it themselves,or is it more likely that Grandad just happened to be on hand at the time?

Thanks again,

Linda

Lancashire / P.U. Lathom?

I have a birth cert giving place of birth (1843) as 6,P.U. Newburgh within Lathom.

Am I right in thinking this would be the Ormskirk workhouse? Thanks.
