Thank you.  I noticed on the 1911 census there were only 100 people.  I think that could be considered small?  I am hoping the birth certificates will tell me if they were born in Multyfarnham or Lackan.  It will be interesting to see.   I would think that if people were farmers (1911 Anne is stated as being a farmer) they would not move around too much?
Cheers,
Sue

Okay, I see you often need furtherdetails to establish where exactly people lived.  I did not have any luck on finding out anything much on Lackan when I searched on the internet.  Just as well as I could have been looking at the wrong thing.  I have a lot to look through now and a much better understanding.    I have also been rearching a maternal family in Cavan and getting confused with the areas so this will help with that research.

Thanks for all this information.

Sue

Thanks.

I took a look at the house and building return census for 1911 that has their details on and it states the following -

poor law union - Mullingar
district - Lackan
townland - Lackan
barony - Corkham?  i could not read it
parish - Lackham

village and town were not filled in.  It tells me that they had a 3 room private dwelling.

I will sit down later and take a good look at the maps you kindly sent. This has been a great education for me.

Thanks so much,
Sue

Thanks Shane.  I do not have a Michael in the family (as yet).  However, my William was born around 1836 so it could be a brother or father.  Thanks for turning that up.

Interestingly, I have been trying to find John Delmore arriving in the U.S from Ireland.  The only possibility (although the dates are out a little  but whats new!)  is a john Delamer and Michael Delamer from Mullinger arriving in NY.  I know from the 1911 census that  Anne and William had 10 children with 6 surviving so this would leave room for a Michael.  He would have possibly been their first born around 1860.  I know the Scottish have a naming system after their parents,  do the Irish?
Sadly this Michael died 2 years after arriving and there are no records on him on Ancestry.  I may get his death cert. as here is the U.S. they usually give parents names.

This is getting more interesting.

Thanks,
Sue

Great.  It is a little complicated,  but the more I read and look at the maps the more it will sink in. It is just different to what I am used to.   It is interesting how the same names are used in different districts.

I look forward to seeing the link.

Thanks again...

Sue

Thanks again Shane.  You have helped me put everything into place.

Hopefully I will be able to dig up more information now that I have a better understanding.

Thanks,
Sue

Thank...good points.  Can I ask what exactly a town land is?  I am also looking at family in Cavan and the definitions of the areas are a little confusing.  I would rather not make assumptions.   I have been seeing Multyfarnham and Mulllingar on the records,  and I know they lived in Lackan.  I am thinking that Multyfarham  and Lackan are villiages and Mullingar would be where the district council is?  It certainly help to know the geography of the area.

Thanks,
Sue

Thanks again Shane.  I will order a few certificates and go from there.  I will also assume this is the right family.  Thanks for the tips on the name as well.  We ended up as Delamore, but I know that in New York and Jersey distant relatives are Delmore and Delmour.   I have read that this name goes all the way back in Multyfarnham (which I believe is a small town) to the 1200's so this could lead to some fun research.

Cheers,
Sue
