Armed Forces / Re: General Sir Alexander WALLACE and family in India pre 1903

Hello John,

Good to see this is still running. I posted some years ago! Your great grandmother Ethel Helen Debonaire Mary (Mollie]) Wallace was my wife's great aunt. As you know she was the sister of Alexander Ross Wallace - he was my wife's grandfather. He was variously in the Indian Civil Service, Headmaster of Sherborne School and Dean of Exeter Cathedral. Her father was Ian Alexander Wallace - one time Headmaster of Canford School.
The family originated in Aberdeenshire. One Alexander Wallace moved to Calcutta in early 1840s and married Helen Davidson Paton. His father was Fraser Wallace and his father in turn was another Alexander Wallace. That's as far as one can go because the parish records give out!
Thanks for posting such great photos. I've put them on the family tree!

Down / Richard Caughey of Comber Co. Down N. Ireland born c. 1800

Richard Caughey is the earliest ancestor I can identify. He was married to Sarah Galway (Gallery?).  They had children Jane(1818) John (c.1830), and Mary (1838) and presumably others. Jane and Mary baptisms appear in the Comber Church of Ireland Parish Registers.
John, my GGGrandfather was married in Belfast in 1854 to Mary Jane Clarke. At they time they lived in Clontonacally, Parish of Comber. He gives his fathers name as Richard and Richard's profession as "tanner".
Can anyone connect with this family / or provide any information about Richard etc.,

Hi Keith,

I have just found this really interesting exchange of information about Gen. Sir Alexander Wallace. My wife is the grand-daughter of  his son - Alexander Ross Wallace-  and for many years we have been interested in his ancestry. All we knew was that he was the son of a Calcutta merchant. Now we know a lot more! I am intrigued by the friend who started you on this quest - since he and my wife must be related!
