Down / Tierney/Finlay of Newtownards/Donaghadee/Belfast
« on: Monday 03 March 08 11:28 GMT (UK)  »
I would like to find any ancestors or have some help in tracing this family back further in Co. Down please.  Michael Tierney (Catholic) son of Edward Tierney  marr. Ellen Finlay  (Protestant I presume) daughter of Hugh Finlay in the Reg. Office, Newtownards 1848. Both were minors, Michael was a Master Tailor of Donaghadee & Ellen was of Ballyvester.   I have not found their births or deaths.  They  had 9 children, the first five appear to have been born in Newtownards, two, Edward & William born 1850 & 1858 died in 1860.

I cannot find the birth, marriage or death of their son Alexander Tierney who apparently went to Canada where he went to the Officer's Training School at Toronto, Ontario.  I cannot find any reference to this place either.  Whether he retuned to Ireland , I don't know.

Ellen Jane born 1856 marr. Thomas Finlay (maybe a cousin) 1884, Belfast, had two children born Ireland & one born Glasgow, Scotland where they appear on the 1891 & 1901 Census.  Have not found their deaths.

Edward born 1861 Newtownards (my grandfather), marr.  & died in Dover, Kent.

The other four children were born in Belfast, Mary Ann in 1864,
cannot find her marriage.  William Hugh born 1866, marr. & died in Dover.  Agnes born 1869, cannot find her marriage.  Michael born 1871, cannot find his marriage.

I have a photo of Michael Tierney take in London between 1869 & 1876 (dated from photographer's address) & yet two of his children were born in Ireland during this time. He had died by 1888 (on my grandfather's marr. cert.) but where I don't know.

Ellen Finlay's brother Hugh, marr. Mary Fergusson in 1848 also.

If anyone can help out with any knowledge of these families I would appreciate it.

Hi Jason
I met your sister Karen some years ago in Taupo (where I was born).  I never met your Dad.  We were over from Aust. last Aug/Sept to visit friends & relatives & do a bit of research.  My parents were Alex & Ivy Tierney (daughter of John Nicolson Watson). I have found:

Andrew Watson b. 1806 Perth
James Watson b. Perth 1783, m. Margaret Young, Perth,1802
Alexander Watson b. c1750 & Margaret Gellatly, parents of James & 3 other children all born Perth 1776-1783.

I am wondering why you think Andrew was born in Kinclaven & not Perth.  Also Julia named her son James & Andrew Peebles 3rd son was Alexander which follows naming patterns of those days.  (There is no Thomas in the family).

Hi Jason
I am also descended from Andrew Peebles Watson & Julia Nicolson  (they were not married).  My grandfather was John Nicolson Watson.  I would be interested to know which of his siblings you are descended from.  Also could you please tell me the details of his father's birth c1799.  I found Andrew Watson born 1806, Perth, Perthshire, but this may not be correct.
